Action Alert:
Ohio Residents: Protect Exotic Animals and Your Community
Published 04/20/07
HB 45, a bill to regulate the future ownership of certain wild animals as pets, will be heard on Wednesday, April 25 in the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources. Your help is needed today and at the hearing to help ensure this crucial piece of legislation passes.
HB 45 will require persons who possess dangerous wild animals or exotic animals to obtain a personal possession permit. This bill also establishes requirements regarding the possession and care of dangerous wild animals and exotic animals.
The passage of this bill will benefit exotic animals and local Ohio communities.
If you live in Ohio, please call and write your Representative today and ask that he or she support HB 45. Also, please attend the public hearing on HB 45 next Wednesday, April 25.
Background
Ohio is 1 of only 11 states that currently have no regulations prohibiting private possession of dangerous wild animals. As a result, there have been serious incidents involving exotic animals in recent years, including the attack on a 4-year-old child by his grandfather’s bear, the mauling of woman by a neighbor’s escaped bear, the attack on a woman by her father’s pet lion, and the deaths of two men due to bites by venomous snakes kept as family pets.
HB 45 will change this and improve public safety, by limiting the future possession of large cats, wolves, bears, nonhuman primates, dangerous snakes, and other potentially dangerous wild animals.

How You Can Help
1. Call, fax, or email today and politely ask your Representative to support HB 45 and help protect exotic animals from the cruelties of the pet trade. If your Representative serves on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, it is even more important that you contact him/her. A list of Committee members can be found at the end of this alert.
Here is some suggested general wording for your call or email:
“I am very concerned about the private possession of wild and dangerous animals in our state and support HB 45. Private possession of wild animals not only poses a public health and safety risk, but is inappropriate and inherently cruel to the animals. I urge you please to support HB 45 when it is offered for a vote on the House floor.”

Talking Points
· Ohio is 1 of 11 states that currently have no regulations prohibiting private possession of dangerous wild animals.
· Potentially dangerous wild animals should not be kept as “pets.” These animals pose public safety and health risks to their possessors and to the community at large. By their very nature, these animals are wild and inherently dangerous and do not adjust well to a captive environment.
· Ohio has seen a number of serious incidents involving exotic animals in recent years, including the attack on a 4-year-old child by his grandfather’s bear, the mauling of woman by a neighbor’s escaped bear, the attack on a woman by her father’s pet lion, and the deaths of two men due to bites by venomous snakes kept as family pets.
· The American Veterinary Medical Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all oppose private possession of certain dangerous wild animals.
