I got to looking at the Survey this Month and noticed that most of the people participating started keeping Venomous Snakes under the Age of 18 “I even saw some at the age of 10 and I was like WOW!!!! that is young”, now I see nothing wrong with this if you are Mature enough to know what your doing, but it did startle me how many actually did start that young.
I was wondering how many of you think that a youngster under the Age 16 should be keeping any Venomous Snakes? In my case, I didn’t start Working/Keeping Venomous Snakes till I was 18. It seems a little dangerous to me for most “and I do mean most” youngsters to endeavor to Keep/Handle any Venomous Reptile. Especially if you take into consideration most of the youngsters I know, wouldn’t even have the Mental Capacity to know how to stay away from the Sharp End.
If any of you have Opinions on this, please way in.

some are lying, no doubt, because it's "cool" but i don't think anyone can tell anyone else when they're ready to keep hots. most adults shouldn't touch them.
what about short people vs. tall people? short people have a natural disadvantage.
what about strong people vs. weak people? when you have to tuck the butt of the hook under your arm to support a 10lb puff, you're that much closer.
and what about reaction time? sure attentiveness contributes, but some people are just quicker than others and far more precise with their movements.
no one set of rules is fair or proper, and at 10, i have no doubt i could have dealt with venomous snakes because i was freeclimbing the sheer face of cliffs, building motors, etc. i'd not feel comfortable letting any of my brothers mess with any venomous snakes though because of how they are.
it really depends on the individual. all that matters to me is why the person wants to mess with them. regardless of age, there is no place for an ego.

Setting "maturity" and "physical traits" aside for a moment and look at the repercussions post bite. Our hobby hangs on by a thread as it is. If the news reports some 45 year old man got bit while cleaning a cage, most would probably react "What crazy fool would keep venomous snakes anyway?.....He probably deserves it!" Now the same scenario with an underage child well thats completely different. Anti-exotic lobbyist would jump all over it. The news wouldnt stop talking about it, just look at every time a dog attacks a kid (and how much coverage that gets). Defacs and protective services would be call in on the parents for child endangerment. The question "Why was the child messing with a venomous snake in the first place?" followed by "someone should make them illegal".
Look at all the heat Steve Irwin took for the whole baby croc dangling incident. You could argue maturity, professional expertise until your blue in the face and it wont matter.
For the future of our hobby no one underage should buy, sell, possess or handle them. Sorry kids!!!

I agree with the above comments... Patric has the right idea... Even when anyone in general, especially children are attacked by dogs, there is a huge outcry for laws and other such regualtions to be established over a single incident... Example - Thanks to dog fighting and animal attacks california and a few other states were considering placing a ban on pit bulls and a few other large breed of dogs. Just imagine what would happen if a child were bitten by a venomous snake also considering the fact that people love dogs! Snakes are not cuddly and soft and that is a major factor should the issue be brought up in a negative position after an accidentof any kind... Just to help out I think an age regulation should be set in place and proper trainning for inexperienced keepers could also assist in this issue.
Thanks Eric

I'm 16 now and i think that i am capable of keeping snakes but i would rather not yet because it would endanger my parents (whom would not know). I will wait until i have a place of my own or with room mates well aware of the dangers. For now, i am happy with watching them and perhaps handling them (with a mentor).
the 18 y.o. rule is a good reference point but it really is all relative, i know plenty of kids that are age 18 but they would never be able to keep a hot snake, the law should be 30 for them, assuming they can grow up by then...

Good thinking, Chris. One should be of legal age, meaning able to sign a binding contract by oneself, able to vote & buy liquor. If one still lives with one's parents, or anyone else, for that matter, one should have the okay from the other inhabitants to keep any venomous in the house. One should also have on hand antivenin for any exotic snakes one keeps.

honestly though, it doesn't really matter because the hobby is under assault, it's not popular with the majority and in this country, right and wrong mean nothing. it's about money and keeping the masses happy because to keep that overpaying job in the government, you gotta make most of the voters happy.
if most people kept hots, there would be a simple federal permit system, simple laws and clear consequences.
we're not the majority and that's all that matters. eventually, we'll all be keeping illegally or we won't be keeping at all

Same old stories, just a deferent day. We will either lose our Keeping Rights, or end up Keeping Illegally.
To make it known, if the Laws that be decided they wear going to Illegalize the Keeping of Exotics Small & Large, yes I would Keep mine Discreetly. But anyway, back to the actual point here. We as Keepers or even Field Herpers should try not to encourage any youngsters to pursue their dreams of Keeping until they have either had the proper training, or are old enough to know their way around a Hot Room. Shoot, it would be like telling a 12 year old to go ahead and pick up that Glock 9mm and pull the hammer back, it wont hurt you. S**t, they would surely hurt themselves, would they not?
Folks, I don’t care how Mature a Teenager is, most of them have not got a real grasp on the concept of Life & Death and how permanent those words are. Most of this lake of Mental Capacity, comes from the unrealness of their Video Game Playing. In other words, their minds are tuned into the lake a reality that is portrayed in Fantasy Land. So in my way of thinking, we should be very, very careful what we Teach.

i agree with wally most youngsters wont understand how dangerous hots are just because the guys on tv make it look easy some people think there is no danger. i always have people ask if i hold my cobras or rattle snakes or they say could you die from a bite. there are alot of people that get venomous snakes because they think it would be cool to have a cobra. theres no shame in saying your not ready for hots, i would love to keep king cobras and mambas and taipans but am not ready for it.

I am getting so sick of hearing this crap that Wally and others put out! Wally stated about teens "Most of this lake of Mental Capacity," hell, he did not even spell it right! And he is not the only one who has stated that here, I can name several others.
And he is quoting a bull sh__ thing that is spreading around the talk radio stations about this supposed study that teens don't have fully developed brains.
Well, guess what, that study has been discredited ! It turns out that teens are more awair of the the dangers of things than adults are, they just do stupid things at times because of peer pressure. They look at the risk, and it turns out that even though they fully know the risk, the peer pressure and group acceptance is far more important to them than the risk.
So, Wally, stop listning to the talking heads on talk radio, and don`t fall into their trap, you are smarter than that !
Sure there are teens that should not be keeping venomous snakes, and probably a lot more of them in Alabama than other states, but there are way many more adults that have no business keeping venomous snakes than all of the teens combined !
At the reptile show this weekend in Spartenburg, SC, I got to listen to many, many adults who came by my table talk about how they wanted to keep Bushmasters and Tropical Rattlesnakes, and Cobras ! Many were complete numbskulls!
The teens who are interested in venomous snake keeping are the future of this hobby, and the serious ones are very smart, and very alert, and very educated !
I would much rather herp with the serious teens who are members of this site than many of the adults here.
They take this hobby seriously, as do I. And I support them for that! Stop cutting them down with bs radio talking points! Like I said before, you are smarter than that Wally! Learn to show it.
Best Regards JohnZ
