At the Spartanburg show this weekend I picked up a snake labeled as a CB cottonmouth. Was in a deli on the blue display sand, which masked a lot of the pattern. On the second day, things slowed down, so I took a more focused look at what was left. I noticed an odd pattern on this cotton, and I took it back to my table and put it in a deli wit about 2 inches of water and soaked the sand residue off. I noticed rather then the think cottonmouth bands, this snake had more hourglass like shapes. Then I noticed some of the hour glasses are broken, much like the southern copperhead. Then I noticed some spots in between the hourglasses. I checked as to the origin of this CB cotton. The owner is a field collector who catches everything and places all snakes into one large holding tank in his back yard. They noticed the little “cotton” as they were packing for the show and tossed him in a deli as CB cottonmouth. Of course, I told him sold at $30. I am not certain that this is an intergrade, I will have a better idea when it sheds off and I can see the true color and of course will prove out if it stays orange 2 years from now. But at the very least I got an aberrant cottonmouth for $30. I can live with that. The link below is to a photo of the snake. Was taken with my phone at the show. I do not want to stress him right now, so I have caged him away and will take some better pics with a real cam soon as he sheds. Look forward to hearing the opinions of “most” of you. =)

Chuck,
I would have to agree with you. It does look much like an intergrade. Maybe you should contact Mardi as he possibly could give a more accurate identification as he has dealt with them in the past.

wow, that does look like a hybrid. very odd looking. people are going to reference mardi's snakes but hybrids don't all share the same visual traits.

Joshua, take the cotton in your profile pic. That is a classic example. Note how the bands are a consistent width. Now look at the bands on this one we are talking about. Notice they are not a consistent width, they are wide on the sides and narrow at the top, more of an hourglass shape. Then notice some of them do not meet at the top, consistent with that of many southern copperheads. Then observe the background color of yours and you probably will not see any pronounced spotting. On this specimen, you will notice pronounces and consistent spotting between the bands. A third feature that makes me question it is the head. While this picture does not show the details of the head, on a normal cotton, you see the strips or lines on the face, this little guy has a clean head and face, no other markings….again consistent with the copperhead.
Madri sold out of the cottonheads, even sold off his adult copper/cotton breeders. The guy that bought them is a friend of mine, I have asked him for some photos of new born cottonheads so I can reference. But like ricky said, there is no consistency. George Van Horn has a EDB/cane cross that from a distance only looks like a long fat cane. John Pullin has one that you have to look twice to make sure its not an EDB. I think it depends on the gender of the parents. They probably more closely resemble the mother. In the case of this one, we have no way to know which the mother was.

Th body pattern looks like a hybrid (note that hybrid is a mix between 2 different species and an intergrade is between two sub species). However, with such a blurred veiw of the head it is imposible to tell. The pattern COULD simply be abbarent though it does strongly resemble cottonheads i have seen in the past. The head however will give away its idenity for sure.

Chuck, the Picture is a little blurry, but it dose look like a possible Hybrid. As you said, waiting for the first the next Shed will probably tell you more.
Of what I can see in the Pic, the Snake dose have some of the Broken Bands that are somewhat consistent with Copperhead X Cottonmouth Hybrids. As you know, most Cottonmouth have a fairly uniform Banding Pattern. Wish you all the luck in the world, you could very well have gotten a good deal on one nice looking Hybrid. Chuck, after the Snake Sheds, try and get a better Picture to Post on here. Then we can see what you have gotten for sure.

Having seen the animal in question, I think it is a hybrid. When Chuck showed it to me on Sunday, it definately caught my eye. I am no expert, but it is a nice animal regardless. If you tire of it Chuck, send it my way! LOL
Best regards,
Mike
