my 9 year old ridge back got bitten tonight by a large Eastern Diamond Back rattlesnake. She previously survived a pygy rattle snake bit. She is very swolen in one leg and in pain - could not get an emergency room vet in Putnam County to see her as I live in Seminole County. My son thinks she may loose a leg? Any suggestions? I will have her at my vet at 8 am. Got bit around 6 pm Sunday

Jennifer,
It is a very tough call! Many factors come into play when trying to assess this given situation.
For instance: What volume of venom entered the body?
and etc. The best course of action is to always seek
immediate medical care. Time is always the one thing that is in short supply when dealing with any envenomation. Hopefully, everything will turn out o.k. for your pet. From what I recall about Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are a very resilent breed; not to mention that they were bred to hunt lions. I think your breed of dog would be more likely to survive a envenomation than any other. As a matter of fact cobras and mambas inhabit the breeds' area of origin (Africa).
