Gee... and I thought that I had doubts as to this snake's identity ! I'm glad to see that it wasn't just MY eyes that had doubts. I'm also glad to see that it sparked so much interest; and that there are so many folks out there with the same interest.

That's fer sure not a North American Copperhead. It is definitely an Australian elapid, most likely Austrelaps, the Copperhead.
John..the smooth scales should have eliminated Agkistrodon, my friend.

Greg, yep, once the photo is posted to the site where it can be enlarged, it is much easier to see details in it than it was from the tiny first photo, LOL !
Oh well, what I said about Copperheads and other snakes occasionally being born without patterns still goes, it does happen.
Best Regards JohnZ

That is a fact. I have a book on the phenomenon, & there are a lot of great pix of aberrant patterns, absence of markings, even snakes without scales.

Here is a link and photo attributed to Reuter's News Agency which ID's these snakes as Copperheads. I would have guessed that at least one of these is a Cobra.

Looks like naja atra or kaouthia to me. We've been having this same i.d. problem on another forum. Wolfgang Wuster says he doesn't think it's an austrelaps and leans towards naja.

Now those are certainly cobras, not copperheads, although I still hold that your pic that started this thread is a copperhead, Austrelaps.
