Today I went to my local pet shop (whos been around since my dad was a kid in the 70's!)to get two pinkies for my new neonate corn and my small amazon (C. hortulanus). My best friend went with me and we were walkin' around and made a bee line for the herp section when we walked in the door. When I was in there I saw the usuals, the BPs, the iggs, the boas, nothin new. So then I walk up front to check out some of the smaller colubrids they had for sale. I take a look at what's new and see the pueblan milksnake is dead.....figures, also I see some critter keepers that are labeled "amelanistic SUNRISE corns" After listenin' to a lady try to pronounce amelanistic and her talking about her corn she had that she always just said was albino for what seemed like five minutes, I go take a closer look at the corns and then I noticed the price tag on these "sunrise" corns. $135!!!!!!! for what I see is a standard amel corn!!!!! Now me knowing this guy (not on a personal level) I know he's just trying to leech as much money as he can off all his animals! I didn't say anything to him because I knew no one was gonna buy one of those for $135. It got me thinking more on how corrupt some dealers, breeders, and pet stores are. If you go into a pet store and look around and look at some of the prices of their products, you can tell a lot about that store. Wether or not they are like car salesmen who just want to make a sale, or if they are people who acutally care. Also whos prices are fair and false information isn't given out. The only things I buy from this guy are mice since there's no where else in this small town to ge them cause petsmart hires pansies who won't sell me mice to even breed *eye roll* I also buy the occasional tarantula because he can't identify them to save his life and he sells em' cheap ( I'm talkin Avicularia sp. for like $20). It made me really mad to see ANOTHER sign of this guy just wanting money. Anyone else have these kinda palces around?? sorry about the confusion and typos.

As a matter of fact, there is this one reptile store near me called Millenium Pets. When I first started learning about snakes I found a rough green snake and bought him for $20.00. Two months later, he died of mouth rot. Never ate anything and acted funny. To this day, it is the WORST store I have ever been in. All of the cages are overcrowded, lots of reptiles that look like they are going to die. I remember this one adult iguana that was severly injured and very sick. My father wanted to buy and take care of him, but there was not enough space in the house. A week later the iguana died. Poor critter. Whenever I talk to the workers there, they don't know anything about the animals that they are selling. I want to save all of the animals and put that place out of buisness, but unfortunately, there really isn't much I can do.

The people in most petshops have no business selling reptiles or amphibians. It is all about making money to them, and has nothing to do with the care of the animals. The same goes for dogs and cats that come from petshops.
If you want to purchase reptiles or other pets, go directly to the breeders or to reptile shows.

Petshops are usually a joke. There's one in owasso oklahoma that was trying to sell western hognose for $150. What's funny is when I asked them for their native permits they started freaking out. (Here in oklahoma you have to have permits for all venomous and native regardless.) But, I've also seen breeder's at shows that scare me to death with their "knowledge" and pricing. A couple of shows back a lady tryed to make me a deal on a blood red corn, yearling, it's special price was $450. What's really sad was she thought that it was a good deal. That's my biggest pet peeve, morphs......$20,000 balls and such...it's just retarded to me what people will sell stuff for. But they only ask the prices because someone out there is willing to pay them.

hmmm I respectfully disagree...
Individually owned pet shops make NO MONEY. They certainly arent in it for the money haha. They are barely able to scrap by, most all fail. It is a terribly stressful existence, hoping for that next sale just to pay the mortgage.
So of course they try to inflate their prices the best they can, they HAVE to. It isnt a social service, they are trying to feed their families here.
But they provide an interesting service...how many of us at least partially got into herpin because of the local pet shop? How many of us rode our bikes up to the local pet shop as kids to check out the ball pythons and ooohhhed and ahhhhhed over the occasional large retic, etc?? The large chains dont provide that, only the little shops barely scraping by.
How much of our money now goes into that business to sustain it? OR do we spend our money online or get the good deals from the big chains or only buy from reptile shows? Why should any respectable business man get into owning a pet store? Nope, they wouldnt, so the only ones left are those maybe without the skill to run it properly.
But hey it's all good, that's what capitalism is all about.

Well it wasn't the prices as much of the "sunrise" crap that the person he bought them from made up that makes me mad. This guy seems to sell the more common stuff at higher prices than the not so common stuff. Like a 5-6 ft retic for about 75 bucks.

It's easy to resist once you come to terms with the fact that that neglected animal will be immediately replaced by another animal that will also be neglect. On top of that, they made a sale which makes them think they're doing things right.
If you cant find a way to get a pet shop to correct their keeping, the best remedy is for them to go out of business.
