They didn't miss it, they just considred it part of a known species. Now they've split it into a serarate species is all. (But that doesn't make an interesting enough headline for "normal" people.)

I ran across this thread some time ago on a South African website. It has pictures of both the new species and it's ginormous venom yield. Impressive stuff! I noticed the specimens Mark Lucas has looked a little familiar, so I sent him a link to the thread and apparently he decided that his brown "N. nigricollis" were indeed N. ashei. Here's the link:

I had the great pleasure of working under the direction of Jimmy Ashe for about a year while at Lion Country back in the late '60s. Heckuva herpetologist. He described one of the bush vipers forty-odd years ago, Atheris desaixi (Ashe). It is good to see that someone named a snake after him.

I think it is awsome and why they havnt put it ont the news or anything is beyond me... However i was watching th news the other night and they decided to run a story on a 5' boa constrictor slithering into someones house in the suburbs... Apperently it was a nieghbors pet that escaped... Thats proposterous.... A new species is determined and yet they run garbage about an escaped boa.... For the love of god... Dont you just love our media today!
Thanks Eric

The media 200 years ago was every bit as vile if not worse. History provides perspective.
