The biggest dangers in this field are substance impairment, inexperience and complacency. As these factors combine, the risk increases exponentially.
Obviously, for the experienced keeper complacency and its attendant routine are (or at least should be) the biggest danger. The small scale collector/keeper (most of us here with a few notable exceptions) can easily fall into the the same trap that the professional venom extractor can. The relative proportions of experience and complacency may differ somewhat but the other side of the equation remains the same.
Complacency is the biggest danger. Routine is death. It turns the brain off. I've cleaned twenty-six cages, what's different about the next?
One aside. Alcohol is an invariably mentioned hazard, but other drugs, legal as well as illegal, can be just as dangerous. Disregarding the idiots using the latter, never forget that the prescription or OTC you are taking can impair you just as surely as alcohol. If you recently downed some Benadryl, SOMA or Percocet maybe you should consider picking another time to clean cages.

JRB brings up a good point. There are many other substances that some, (especially young) herpers use, that can distract from their judgement, and slow their reflexes, when working with venomous snakes.
Please be carefull out there !

Don't forget the "fatigue factor". Knowing your animals and which one will test you and your skills.Sometimes I'll just clean one or two of the nasty ones and come back later or the next day.

Since I don't think anyone else has mentioned it yet and we're still on the subject... Don't forget the other "fatigue factor".
If you're simply tired or distracted by other thoughts, go to bed or go do something else (not something with power tools either). The snakes will still be there in the morning.
