summary from REXANO list posting below, FOX/Reilly guets "Mike Heithaus" said so many lies and misinformation, like that it is illegal to own exotic cat, LIE, it is illegal on federal level to transport them across state lines withour USDA, but it is not illegal to own them IN state, what an idiot, but they spent more time on reptile scare tactics.
Well, NGeo 'behaviour expert' sure was misbehaving on TV.

from REXANO elist:
Well, they finally ran the long-promised exotic report on Bill O'Reilly. So many lies and distortions. I hardly know where to begin.
The "expert" was Mike Heithaus from the National Geographic. I put "expert" in quotes because he does not seem to know the laws. He stated that ANY PERSON owning a big cat was ILLEGAL under federal law and that they could only have gotten them through a black market.
He also stated that big cats will always turn against people when they grow.
The show also stated that there are 34 MILLION "exotic" owners. I wish that were true. If it were we would have more collective power than the black or Hispanic segments of society politically.
Heithaus also played the reptile scare cards. DISEASE! VENOM! Habitat destruction!!
Primates? Don't ask. They're "terrible!"
It seems that if we have not had an animal domesticated for 5000 years it is bad, bad, BAD!
O'Reilly let the NG/AR stooge lie and do all the claims. Either he did not know the truth or decided to let Heithaus take the blame. Heithaus was credited as NG's Behavior Expert.
I guess it could have been worse. It could have been on a channel with more viewers.
It's probably being uploaded to Fox or YouTube already.

Below is what was sent out as a bulletin. Herps and venomous were definitely part of their 'target'.
O'Reilly Factor 4-1-08
Mr. O'Reilly chose to do an extremely anti-exotic segment on his show with only one person, Mike Heithaus (Ohio native) from National Geographic.
Watch the clip and see if you can pick out all the blatant lies, opinions only and general WRONG statements.

We need to get some respectful well thought out letters written to both these guys and explain the true side of private ownership.
Here's Mike Heithaus' contact info:

I would not waste a second on Bill "OH REALLY". I did send an email to the Ph.D guy because I think he has some professional credibility issues to deal with.

Folks should not watch the The O’Reilly Factor, as old bill is just another piece of sellout manure.
He only exhists because folks tune into him.
Dont watch his show.
If folks do not tune in, the show will die.
Tell your friends to not watch his show.
Hopefully, it will be gone soon.
Best Regards JohnZ

Bill O'Reilly attacks pet owners
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBqoVs4fj4Q
EDIT: Dr. Heithaus posted a letter about his experience during this clip and stepped up to the plate about what went wrong and what went right. I applaud him for doing so. You can read the letter here:
http://www.rexano.org/NewsArchivePage...
No word yet on if O'Reilly will step up to the plate, correct the errors shown during this segment, and get a representative from the pro-responsible pet owners communities.

The content of this video comprises shots of a Fox News O'Reilly Factor segment attacking exotic pets, pictures of anonymous exotic pet owners (a couple are my own), and some music. All content is used under the US copyright law "fair use" for educational and commentary purposes provisions. Resources are cited where appropriate so you can track them down for research or purchase. I am not a business, non-profit group, or someone that accepts donations. I'm just an exotic pet owner trying to get the other side of the story out there to praise the positives of these animals.
Personally, I'm a big fan of Fox News and watch Mr. O'Reilly's show almost every evening. After seeing this segment I was so thoroughly disgusted that I had to do something about it. Emails and phone calls to Bill's shows have gone unheeded, so here's a video with clips from the segment mixed in with the FACTS about exotic pet ownership. It's sad that I have to do Bill's homework for him, and that the 'no-spin zone' and the 'fair and balanced' network had 1 anti-exotic pets show host (Mr. O'Reilly) and one anti-exotic pets self-proclaimed pet expert (Dr. Heithaus). Where was the pro-exotic pet ownership person or responsible exotic pet owner to counter the hatred spewed by O'Reilly and Heithaus? This segment was the kind of bias and unfairness I've come to expect from MSNBC, not Fox News.
Some people don't like exotic pets. Some people don't like SUV's, subdivisions, cigarettes, the color pink, or pork chops. People can avoid those items just like they can avoid exotic pets. We are a nation of diverse ideas, backgrounds, and opinions. It's important for people to be open-minded and tolerant of those who choose to own exotic animals. People don't like it when they're discriminated against based on race, sexual orientation, or class. Likewise, exotic pet owners should not be discriminated against because they choose to break away from the cat and dog cookie-cutter molds.
