Snakes as Pets Pose Little Threat to Public

Editor: I would like to educate County Board members regarding outlawing venomous snakes in the name of public safety [“Prohibition on Venomous Snakes Is Fast-Tracked Toward Approval,” May 1].
If enacted, this ban would be based on pure emotion and hysteria, instead of science and facts. Furthermore, by not grandfathering the current owners and forcing them to get rid of their animals within 30 days, the county might get sued for taking property, since animals are property under U.S. Constitution.
How would County Board members feel if they were forced to get rid of their beloved pets, of any species, within 30 days?
It is ridiculous to worry about captive, caged venomous snakes, when Virginia is home to wild venomous snakes: the cottonmouth, water moccasin and timber/canebrake rattlesnake, among them.
Wild venomous snakes in the U.S. kill, on average, 12 people each year; captive venomous snakes kill 0.7 people per year (19 killed in the last 13 years, all of them owners/handlers/keepers, NOT the general public).
It never ceases to surprise me how people fear exotic animals, and react to their fear of the unknown with hysteria, instead of educating themselves.
In the U.S., only one person dies per year as a result of attacks by captive big cats, 1.5 people by captive reptiles, 0.13 by captive bear and 0 by captive non-human primate. In comparison, 45,000 people die each year in traffic accidents, 47 by lightning and 1,600 by falling down stairs.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery jackpot (1 in 13,983,816, all six winning numbers selected) or even the elusive Mega Millions Lottery jackpot (1 in 175,711,536), than being killed by a captive reptile (1 in 198,412,189).

It needs correction 9, not 19 killed in 13 years by captive venomous snakes.It is my mistake, do not blame the news for this one, I was typing too fast and didn't catch the typo in time, I wrote the editor to see if it can be corrected online.

tiger...i respectfully think your letter is good. fairfax ans prince william have the same Laws and they suck...do you live in Northern VA?

Thanks MUFDADDY2 and no, I do not live in VA and I don’t even currently own snakes. I just hate idiotic government.
Could I respectfully ask you to be more respectful to the people on this forum? I saw your other posts that were very condescending to this forum’s members.
You have a huge following on YT, use it for the good purpose, to spread more good educational info rather than some (NOT all of course) of the stuff that is potentially harmful and could get somebody injured, and at the end result in more bans that would negatively impact you and your ability to have these exotic pets.
You have some good stuff on your YT, keep the good stuff, ...but the venomous snake video was somewhat scary to be totally honest with you...

LOOK.....i know i do ALOT of things that are unconventional! that are not common practice but I pride myself for it..Also i did not come here to start anything...but people instantly started crap with me...thats cool! I LIVE FOR IT! but seriosuly...Al told me I am the PEE-WEE play house of reptile keeping...I have a 3 year old son...I thought about what he said...AND I WAS PROUD OF IT! The next generation of herp keeprs are super important to me...I have changed the way many of them look at reptiles and thier PARENTS ESPECIALY! I have expanded the hobby to the youth alot and helped them look at the hobby in another way...FUN! let us not forget that these youth, they grow up. they become mayors, govenor, SENATORS...they enact and protect our hobby..they ARE the furture of this hobby...and by mixing the hobby with my fun personality..well...thats what I wanted to do.

could hardly be considered a polite arrival to this forum.
I am glad the next generation is important to you and that you changed perception of reptiles among the youngsters. However, out hobby is under constant ban attack and maybe you can make your followers help us fighting these bans, help us?
Your copperhead video is bad, and could get somebody injured; with that video you are becoming part of the problem, not the solution, if somebody repeats what you did, stick your hand inside a tiny coiled venomous snake’s tank.
While copperhead bite is survivable by humans considering the snake’s small size and less potent hemotoxic venom, if you attempt to do the same with Mohave rattlesnake, exposing your wrist full of easily accessible veins, you might make your wife a widow and your son will grow up without a father.
You might not care or like people on this forum or care how your potential death or serious injury could affect this hobby, but I hope you still care about your family and don’t want to put them thru grief.
