There are several biting insects (mosquitoes & assassin bugs come to mind) in addition to the stinging hymenopterans.
What really needs to happen is a good autopsy. I read an article in a medical journal last year that bewailed the fact that autopsies are on a serious decline. It seems that doctors fear liability if their diagnosis was wrong (which could have lead to the death), they are pretty expensive to do (not just anbody can do an autopsy), and families don't like having their loved ones 'disturbed'.
Medical science is still a long way from knowing everything. Mistakes could be learned from. If this turns out NOT to be a snakebite, then maybe it will raise an outcry for somebody to develop a bite ID kit (I think the Aussie's already have this for them venomous continent).

Larry and Josh both bring up good points. All any of us here are speculating based on not much real evidence, and what ever distortions that the news folks introduced. Still, it is fun to do. Almost like reading a Sherlock Holmes story, LOL.
As far as an post-mortem examination, at least disecting the actual bite wounds could tell the depth of the puncture. If it was for instance 1/4 inch deep, then a copperhead or small rattlesnake might be the cause, if it was deeper, then a larger rattlesnake or cottonmouth might come into play, etc.....
The Australians have developed testing kits that quickly can determine if some types of snakes caused a bite, but most medical examoners in this country have access to gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers that could determine toxins from small samples of tissue fairly quickly.

Shock usually kills people way faster than the actual accident. There are real reports of people in deep south Texas dying from a bull snake bite, obviously not a venomous bite, but human fear of snakes can kill just as easily. The problem of this bite is, you will never really get the total account, but I would heavily wager shock as your main culprit to a rapid death. It happens with most sever accidents. Auto, shark attacks, the list goes on and on.
