Take a look at the photo gallery at the end of this story.
While this topic has been discussed before, everytime I see photos of people gassing gopher tortoise burrows, pulling Diamonbacks out of the burrows with fish hooks, etc, I feel that there has to be something that we as a group can try to do to stop this. In Georgia Gopher Tortoises are fully protected, however using gasoline in pursuit of rattlesnakes should not be considered illegal. In addition the Eastern Indigo snake (which also use the burrows) is a Federally protected species and yet the distruction of Gopher tortoise burrows is still allowed. The misinformation that is spread in these events by people who can barely form a sentence is ridiculous.

Sloane, it is illegal to gas gopher burrows in Georgia. I am sure that it is still done, but if catch someone doing it, DNR can take their truck and gear just like they were shinning deer. What we need is SHHS to actually rent a booth at the two active ones in Georgia and put on an educational display. I would be willing to chip in some for the booth and even man it for a few hours.

In Georgia using gasoline in pursuit of rattlesnakes "should not be considered illegal" is how the law reads. I would donate my time and money to rent a space at these events to provide some real truthfull info.

Intentionally releasing petroleum products may not "be considered illegal" by GA DNR, but your state environmental agency may beg to differ. The fine here in SC is $10,000 per incident (multiple burrows = multiple incidents). If they don't care, then I believe that there is USEPA legislation dealing with this (State laws can't be more lax that their federal counterparts)

If it is not illegal in the state of Georgia to "dump" petroleum into the ground, I'm pretty sure it's against the Federal Govt. EPA.
