Cathy,
This could be a difficult one.
If the show is restricted to Captive Born snakes only, how will you be able to proove that ?
Some dishonest dealers would bring wild caught animals and say they were born and raised in captivity.
And what about "farmed" exotic snakes, like Chondropythons, that were captured while gravid, but produced their eggs in captivity in their native country, and the young are then exported. Are those still considered captive born ?
I believe that folks are mostly upset by some vendors who overcollect native animals in an effort to make a quick buck.
Perhaps it would be easier to put a limit on the number of wildcaught animals of the same species that a dealer brings ? That could cut down on the folks who want to bring large numbers of snakes like copperheads and cottonmouths and ratsnakes to a show.
The idea of a Captive Born only show sounds good, I just do not see it working all that well.
Best Regards John Z

Actually, A CB show would not be that hard.
Daytona has done CB only with the NRBE for years.
While you may not be able to exclude every wild-caught animal, you would certainly exclude the recently caught, poorly cared animals that the smaller venue shows are known for.
I would support a CB only venomous show.
Whether or not I could afford the gas to get to it is an entirely different matter.

No, not really. Many of the snakes I happen to like keeping are regular, old run-of-the-mill stuff, like Greenish Rats and Coachwhips which aren't often bred in captivity. I'm trying to build up my own nice breeding colony of Eastern and Western Coaches, but this is a species, which along with Nerodia, have been largely neglected by breeders, and it's very, very difficult to find CB specimens. One of the main reasons I attend these shows, in addition to reptiles, is the selection of inverts-spiders, scorpions, etc, and while there are many CB tarantula species available, many others are still rare enough in captive collections that the best way to obtain good stock is through imported and/or WC animals, and when it comes to scorpions and true spiders, most are WC. Having a CB-only show might work in some place like Florida, where there's been a large herp community for many decades now, but I think to do that in SC, which does not have either the population of the Sunshine State or as big a herp community, limiting a show to only CB animals would seriously cut back on the numbers of vendors that would show up and the number of buyers. Besides, with a "normal" morph, like an "Okeetee" Corn or a "regular" Southern Copper, how would you KNOW the animal was CB, other than to take the word of the seller? If it was all beat up and scarred, yeah, it would be fairly easy to tell, although I've had CB animals that through either neglect or outright cruelty on the part of a previous owner, acquired some scars. An animal captured while still young, before it had a chance to experience injuries, would look just as good as one that had been born/hatched in captivity. Again, other than taking the word of the seller, there'd be no way to prove or disprove an animal's WC or CB status, in many cases, so you'd still have to rely on those people's honesty and integrity, which is basically what you do now in expecting them to bring only healthy animals to the show, and remove any from sales if they don't look good.

Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show (MARS) in Timonium, Maryland is CB only, and that show stays packed for two days.

I would fully support a CB only show, but believe that some of the things mentioned in the earlier posts are spot-on. Proving something is CB can be difficult. As well, some species are seriously neglected by breeders and thus wouldn't be available. That means that greenish rats, Eastern box turtles, anoles, Southern copperheads, Eastern cottonmouths, water snakes and coachwhips/racers would be nonexistent. Generally speaking this is not a bad thing. But at least coachwhips aren't caught in large numbers, and if you collect and/or breed them it is nice to know that you may see one or two in Columbia.
Maybe the better option is still to keep the show as it is, limit the wild-caught stuff to low numbers and outwardly healthy looking animals. The wild snakes are usually quite obvious as many have wild, dirty skins on them still. Some of the tables, especially in the HOTS area, have nothing but wild, dirty and unhealthy animals on them.

I completely support the idea. I also think you would have a real large turnout at a all CB show. I am not saying change one of the Columbia shows, maybe do it in Greenville on another date. Greenville gives you a nice centralized location between more major cities in more states than any other local show. consider a invitational breeders show not just your southeastern vendors. Breeders from all over the USA, I think it would attract a larger crowd like daytona and other shows do as well. South carolina might even bring a larger crowd with enough work. Because of location I know plenty of people who would attend daytona if it was closer I feel if you can get the breeders the crowds will come. You could close the gap by half or more for many people traveling with a big all cb breeders expo.just my .02

Joe's comment about not turning Columbia into a CB show is a good one, just fix some of the small problems there.
If you are going to do a CB show, another SC location might be worth a try. That way, you could find out if the vendors will turn out in enough numbers to support the show or not.
However a couple of years ago, we had a show in Greenville, and Spartenburg. I can not remember which one it was, but one of those shows was in a very sleazy part of the town. There were prostitutes and folks selling crack on the street corners on the way to the show. The area was a real slum. I kind of think it was Greenville. If that was the case, we would have to find a place to hold the show in a much better part of town.

I am not for an all cb show myself, along with previous statements, i also enjoy variety in different localities (Ie look at varing localities of grey band kings) and along with snakes that arent bred in captivity, most captive lines few actually know where there animals came from. I dont mind SELECTIVE (yknow, not keeping EVERY dam thing u find in the field) field collection and it puts new blood and thus traits in many old lines,

OK, First let me say that if we do a all CB show, It will be a third SC show. It may be in Columbia or another city. It will not be in Greenville or Spartanburg because of County or City laws that are in effect. That is why we don't have one in Greenville, And last year was the last Spartanburg show. We are checking other Counties and City laws all over the state of SC. We would like to do this in 2009. That is why we are asking for your input on this matter. So keep your thoughts coming. We all have to work together, And that means Repticon as promoters, The Vendors and the Attendees.
Thanks for your support,
Danny
