Yeah when it comes to herps at petsmart or petco they dont have a freakin clue. Petsmart is stupid in that they dont sell feeders and wouldn't even sell me breeder mice! They, from what I've heard, dont feed adult mice to their snakesonly pinkies. It's crazy if they want our money they'd sell us whatever we wanted regardless of if it was food or not. I see soooo many forum posts about petsmart or petco and it's pissed me off because they're so freakin ignorant........just my quick rant.

LOL... This is the topic I've been waiting for!
I got into an argument with my girlfriends brother about some skin infection on his iguana, and apparently the clerk at PetCo told him to pour rubbing alcohol into the open sores! Well, not surprising the iguana was dead in the morning.
He claims that PetCo STIIL told him the right thing to do, and it was his fault the iguana died. He also told me that the man at PetCo is an "expert" and can name EVERY speices of snake that you can legally own in Pennsylvania and felt rather stupid when I told him we have allmost anything in PA because of our absence of laws regarding exotics.
He talked to the same man at PetCo who said that I didnt know what I was talking about and "thats why PetCo doesnt sell rattlesnakes"... LOL... I made him look up the laws on the Fish & Game commissions website and he too had nothing to say.
Anyways, the PetCo near me however, is ok, the same two girls know very little about what they sell and they know it. The allways know when I come in to get mice and rats for my coppers or rattlesnakes.
But they way many of their animals are kept just shows that even the management knows absolutely NOTHING about husbandry requirements of the animals being kept.
i will soon be breeding mice so I do not have to return howver, because I too get angered when seeing an employee "try" to give advice on reptiles, fish, or birds....
Great Topic! And very interesting about the ties to Humane Society Services..

One problem with petshops is that folks come in to them and expect the folks who work there to know all about animals and their proper care.
So, the folks at shops will often answer questions, wether they know the correct answer or not. It is too bad that they can not say "I do not know the answer to that question, but I will find out for you."
That is how we get the advise to feed grapes to ratsnakes, LOL !
From age 14 to 17 I worked at an independent pet shop, and we were the only one in Atlanta at the time that sold a large amount of herps. I can understand the attitude of wanting to know more about things than the customers. I made an effort to keep informed, and to offer good advise to my customers. I created care sheets for the animals that I sold. Try to find that these days at petco or petsmart !
Some pet shops have great people, and do a great job. However, I think that is less possible at the commercial pet shops that have largly replaced the independent mom and pop pet shops that were once common. Still, there will be a few commercial shops who have knowledgable individuals working there, but those are rare these days. Most of the shops I visit have a bunch of folks who really do not know very much at all about the animals and products they sell.
You can tell the influence of the HSUS / PETA is making its way in to those shops, when they ask you what are your plans for that mouse your are buying, and refuse to sell it to you if it is to become snake food.

The Petco where I live actually has care sheets for most of the reptiles they sell. They are fairly lean and are not as specific on food and enclosure size (should be kept in an appropriate sized enclosure) as they should be, but they are not half bad.

Vield chams ??? Vield chams ???
Gosh I hate abbreviations.
While the leeeeezaaard keepers might know what that is, I bet a lot of the snake keepers here will have no idea. Unless they google it, like I did, so I could know what it meant, LOL !
I have a theory that texting messages on cell phones by teens is what is causing the desire to use abbreviations, and that flows over into the written and spoken language.
While we could blame the texters for being lazy, perhaps we should blame the cell phone crooks for charging so much that folks have to abbreviate to save minutes ????
