I do not think that Coralmyn is currently being evaluated for FDA approval. Antivipmyn is currently undergoing clinical trials.

Jeffrey is right, the Coralmyn is not part of the clinical trials. However, it should still be available at some zoos, venom centers, and can be purchased by individuals who go through the steps needed.
Perhaps the Coralmyn will eventually become approved in this country, after the Polyvalent Anti-snake Fabotherapic is approved ? The limited supply of the Wyeth Coral Snake antivenom would seem to make this almost certain.
On a seperate note, the Bioclon Institute has antivenoms in development for African Elapids.
Perhaps this product will eventually become available here in the US.

This is really very old news except for the FDA extending the shelf live of the current product. Wyeth stopped A/V production more than 5 years ago because there was not enough "profit" to produce the product.

Yep, old news four us, but for folks who have only been keeping Venomous Snakes for a year, it is a different story and valid concern.

As a snakebite specialist that is spear-heading this issue in Central Florida-I can directly address some of these issues. (1) Wyeth has discontinued all production of the North American Coral Snake Antivenom-yes! due to not making any money! BUT! As previously noted 1 Lot has had its expiration date extended to 2009. Wyeth does have a supply of this lot# available for facilities. (2) We are currently attempting to encourage the State Health Dept and FDA to extend the expiration on the other available lot to increase the supply of available antivenom. (3)The Bioclon antivenom has shown to be effective in treating both the fulvius and teneres which could not be said for the the Wyeth antivenom. (4) Currently Miami-Dade is the only agency stocking the coralmyn in Florida although there are facilities in the process of attempting to obtain it as well. (5) Coralmyn is currently what the FDA classifies as an Orphan drug just like all other exotic antivenoms and can be used to treat envenomations. It will probably never be officially FDA approved since there are currently no clinical studies and Bioclon will probably not spend the money on R&D. The only study performed was by Elda Sanchez to the best on my knowledge.
The Florida Poison Centers, Health Dept, and FDA are working hard to ensure that coral snake envenomations are treated appropriately with either antivenom. Since I am directly working on this issue, I will answer any questions if possible. I am also meeting with representatives from Bioclon in the near future.

Hey Joe,
There have been other studies.
Here is one:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12645961?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DiscoveryPanel.Pubmed_Discovery_RA&linkpos=1&log$=relatedarticles&logdbfrom=pubmed
And other facilities in Florida have Coralmyn.

KARL:
I would be interested to know what Healthcare facilities other than zoo's or venom research facilities possess Coralmyn in Florida besides Miami-Dade and possibly a new venom bank I have heard about in Northern Florida since I just spend the past 2 weeks contacting every hospital in Central Florida. Unless a facility in Miami has it due to Miami-dade affiliation.
As far as studies go-I am referring to clinical trials in the U.S. which I can tell you for a fact there are none since I am working closely right now with Bioclon. But thanks for the link to that study-I will check it out.

Joe, if you do find a list of Healthcare facilities in the SE States that possess Coralmyn, or, the old Wyeth product, how about publishing that list here.
That way, snake hunters would be able to supply valuable information on antivenom locations to whatever hospital they were taken to in the event of a Coral Snake bite, or perhaps they could drive to, or have the ambulance take them to, the correct hospital in the first place.
