geckolover,
While I agree that most Nerodia can be "tamed” to a certain extent, without much effort. Many agree that several Nerodia species are very "snappy" when first caught.
Surely, there are some venomous snakes that COULD be "hand-tamed", but it would be a very dumb thing to try, as it endangers you own safety, and puts other keeper’s rights at risk.
In short, reptiles cannot be "tamed". While individual animals may become accustomed to being handled, no reptile will ever become "tame" or predictable.
I'm going to use the quote from Al's profile here, as it is a very good one.
"You can take the Snake out of the jungle but you can't take the jungle out of the Snake. Always expect them to do the unexpected."
As snakes are sensitive to many stress factors, there will always be occasions when something will "spook" a snake, causing a defensive reaction. Because snakes think differently than us, sometimes that "tick" that scares them or stresses them isn't too obvious.
Anyways, the point of this post is that Jon is wishing to use a Nerodia as a "trainer snake" for a cottonmouth someday, and I think most snakes of the Nerodia genus would be a great choice.
And do not worry about disagreeing! Some of the most interesting debates come up from posts of conflicting opinion. Although, you are speaking from limited encounters, whereas I have been keeping and breeding many Nerodia species for years, at 12, you’re on the right track judging by your profile. Disagreement can be very useful, especially in forums such as this one.
Take Care,

Geesh guys, I have had northern Copperheads (3 gravid females) had 37 babies all together, and I could put my hand in the tank with all 40 of them and grab/pick anyone of those up without getting even tounge flicked, not to brag but all species of animals can be real pissy or can be really mellow.. By the way all my Copperheads were WC.... "
...................... yea.......... you just keep doin that.....
anyway - Naturecoastexotics.com prety mucha lways carries watersnakes of some type I've thought about them but if memory serves me correct I can't keep them here - damn the unfortnatcy of living in georgia....
Anyway no mater what you train with good luck, its good to see someone who is intrested in keeping venomous making a genuine effort to learn before geting in over their head.
I have to admit my adrinline always gets to pumpin when i am havin to work with any of my guys, from my coppers to my new lil edb, an about teh first time they don't wanna ride the hook nicely is always a "fun" exprence an relay gets your heart goin. There's been times when i've finsihed workin with one of the snakes I have sitin in my snake room an had to come in the living room an sit down look at my bf an say "lord i need somethin to calm my nerves..." an you can literly see my throat jumping my pulse is pounding so hard lol.

LadyBloodRose, I was not trying to be funny or come off like I am stupid or don't know what I am doing, I was just trying to make the point, that all snakes can be really moody or really mellow, no matter what the species.. I do not practice the art of putting my hand in a tank of VENOMOUS, but I did that day without consequences, but I do not feel that it was a smart thing to do or should I try it again, maybe I should not of brought it up?, But I was just trying to make a point, in my experience, Northern Water Snakes have always struck out at me even before being pinned or hooked where as the Northern Copperheads only did after being pinned by my tongs or other tools. That is all..
