Does anyone have a lead on the black plastic hide boxes. These are the standard hides, nothing fancy. I know that they stopped making them a while back and some vendors had them in stock. Now that stock has dwindled out there. Bean Farm and Zilla both have none left. I need about 100 of each size.
Thanks in advance-

You're kidding, these are no longer available? I love these things. I know the criticism about them not meeting the natural needs of snakes. What I did was nest them with a smaller one on the bottom and a larger one with the entrance facing the other way on top of it. This gives a cheap 3-D hide that was very easy to manage.

For most medium size snakes I buy the standard black plastic office trash cans from the local hardware store and cut them the way I like (use the bottom few inches). <$4,00 and a few minutes of work. For pythons I do the same with plastic storage containers. Seems like a lot of waste, but you can sometimes find uses for parts of the leftovers.
Don't cut yourself! :)

There are a lot of items that can be used as hide boxes.
Stuff like cat litter pans, and rubbermaid dish pans, and trash cans like Larry said. Just use your imagination when you walk down the isles at wallymart.
You can often find cutting blades that attach to the regular Weller solderning irons, and those sharp blades, when red hot, will make quick work of cutting an opening in a plastic container.

OK, car hoods aside, I still really like the traditional overturned flowerpot with the hole enlarged and smoothed, and I really think snakes like them too. They are round, for one thing, which enables the snake to coil inside and feel in contact with the sides of the pot all the way around, which is very comforting to a positively thigmotactic animal. The earthenware also makes them feel more solid and secure, and there's also the feeling of going down into something, possibly giving the snake the illusion that it is underground. It's also kind cute the way they will poke their heads out of the hole and rest them on the edge. They are also (1) cheap (2) come in a wide variety of sizes (3) durable and easy to clean and (4) don't look half bad.
Recently I have taken to using overturned baskets. Especially attractive are the ones made of natural, unrefined materials such as vines all woven together. I use the ones with handle-holes left in either end which form the entry hole to the hide for the snake. These have the advantage that the snake is still partially visible, yet still feels securely enclosed. They can be found in very large sizes, which is good for boids, etc. They should be carefully inspected, however, to make sure that no nails were used in their construction and that there are no sharp ends poking out anywhere. They can also be adorned with plastic leaves, etc. so that they look like a little brushpile.

I did eventually go to the Dollar Store and buy a few stacks of the plastic bowls (they come 4/1.00) I used a soldering iron to create a hole and then a spray paint (for plastics) to darken them up. Of course the culminatus think that they are groovy to crawl on, but nobody will go inside.
But...I will be ordering some regardless, we like everything to look uniform here (it has to look tidy and professional for potential grant donors).
Thanks for the help all!

That's true- I often find that rattlesnakes in particular won't use the hide but like to rest on top of it, snoopy-fashion.
