As a follow-up to the Grace Wiley thread of a few months back, I ran across this link to an interesting (if not very well-written) account by one Arthur Jones, who knew her. Like Grace, he was a product of an earlier age, and so some of his antics and views, and use of the word "poisonous" may be excused (though carrying a rattlesnake in a cloth bag on a crowded bus is certainly not very smart in any age).

His account of the crocodile taking ahold of the king cobra's tail is interesting, though, since the writer Dan Mannix, who was largely responsible for Grace Wiley's fatal cobra bite, included the same anecdote in his posthumous writings about Grace, claiming that he and his wife were present at the time, and that the annoyed cobra rapped his wife, Jule, on the forehead to get her attention. According to Mr. Jones' account, however, Grace was alone when this happened, and the cobra rapped on her chest.
I loved Mr. Mannix's book All Creatures Great and Small as a young child, but suffice it to say he has taken quite a dive in my estimation since then...
