I have kept and still keep a number of reptiles for years now and I am ready to keep an Agkistrodon contortrix as my first hot. My question is do any of you know if a permit is required in Alabama to keep a native venomous snake? Also, is it un-lawful to keep a specimen found while out in the field?
I have sent an email to the Alabama Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources asking these questions but have not heard back yet.

This might be a place to start looking.I don't know how up to date it is, but the contact info should be good. Take care, Marty

Thanks Marty. The way I read it and from what I have read from the ADCNR only non-native venomous species require permits. I will research the matter further.

Even if you are allowed to keep native venomous in your state, you still have to be careful of the county / city laws. What I mean is, although legal to own venomous in a state, it may be illegal to own venomous in your county or inside your city limits. Just something to keep in mind.

No permit required, but you do need to check your Local City Laws & County Laws to see if they have an ordnance against the keeping of Venomous Species. As for what you can own in the Alabama, anything that is found in the State. This includes Cottonmouth (All Three Known Forms That Are Soon To Change To Two ), Northern & Southern Copperhead ( With Some Species Changes Soon To Come ), Eastern Coral Snake, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Dusky & Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake, & Cane / Timber Rattlesnake.
Hope this is a help to you & Email me if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the info. I got a reply back from the ADCNR and they said just what you have. All I have left to do now is check out the Blount County, AL laws and I will be set as far as the legal side goes. More questions to come. Thanks again. Jarred
