I tried this question a few months back and got no hits. Let me give it another shot:
I'm writing an essay, part of which focuses on Gaboon Vipers as a commodity in West Africa. I've found lots of info on the bushmeat trade--the procurers, distributors and, um, consumers of Gaboon Viper 'steaks' in high end restaurants there. Grim stuff. But I've hit a bit of a wall trying to find importers (or former importers) for the 'hot' trade in Europe and the US...
Has anyone on here dealt with Africa-based importers or US-based importers of wild specimens (particularly back in the day before captive bred was the rule)?
Anyone able to make a general statement as to (rough) ratios of captive bred to wild caught WA Gaboons in the current US market? Can anyone say when captive breeding really took off and began to dominate the market?
I know these might seem random questions, but I'm hoping to move towards a case study of how the 'hot' trade might be impacting (for the better) overall population numbers. Thanks.
