hello all, i have a question for you concerning a snake i have(rhino viper)that was sick a couple months back.it had a thick bubbly clear discharge coming from its nose and mouth, and was moving real jerky. i injected antibiotics over a 2 week period and things seemed to clear up pretty good. no more discharge or jerky movements.but theres a few things going on, it looks like its mouth is curling up and i can see the white flesh of its mouth, almost like shes smileing at me. at first i thought it was a hydration problem but i see her drink, and she has eaten since she was sick,so she is taking food. has anyone ever seen this? It's tough to say without actually seeing the snake. It may very well be a hydration issue. A snake can drink and still become dehydrated. This is especially true when a snake is on antibiotics. Baytril (enroflaxin) is notorious and supportive fluids should always be given when treating with this drug.

see, thats what i was thinking to,so i have been soaking her every 3 days or so for an hour at a time. and everytime i do she drinks.have you ever seen the thing with the mouth? it screams out dehydration to me but i cant understand why she wouldnt be taking up any of the water she drinks.there dosent seem to be any blockage, because she has taken down food. and she hasnt passed any overly loose stools.i am stumped.shes pushing on though, but shes not the snake she use to be. there has to be something going on. Hi Danny,
Sorry your Rhino's not too well, can you tell me is there any improvement since your original post?
Also, how old is the snake ?
If possible, it would be helpful if you could send me a pic of the whole snake and a close-up of the mouth.
All the best,
Al

Also, in situations involving bacterial infections, it oftentimes takes much longer than a couple of weeks to eradicate - these things can really hang on. I've had to treat a snake with RI for over 3-4 months in severe cases so keep a close eye on it. We've had great success by using Fortaz but sometimes, you have to also look at Amikacin and/or Baytril...only a vet can diagnose. Also, if the snake is severely dehydrated, you may have to get some subq fluids going - they are injected just under the skin in between the skin and muscle layer - easy to do and makes a huge difference but consult your vet first as he will have to give you what you need.
Make sure the snake has warm areas - these are not heat loving snakes but when they are stressed or sick, they will need a little extra heat to help them fight.
Good luck.
