The Reptile Nation is a bunch of Grass Roots Warriors! The letter count now tops 45,000 letters. The phone calls have clogged the Congressional phone lines. We are the smallest constituent group and we have dwarfed the response of the pet industry and all the other affected industries combined. The Reptile Nation has turned Capitol Hill upside down with phone calls and buried them under an avalanche of letters!!!
We have been focused on the Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans & Wildlife.... because that is where the fight is! USARK has led the charge and the Reptile Nation has had an impact never seen before! Others may try and take credit for your victory when it comes, but no one can take this from those that have worked so hard to force the Subcommittee to take notice. It will belong to the Reptile Nation.
We are now in the 11th hour. I know that many of you have worked tirelessly to make this happen. You have my gratitude and respect. We need one more big push to KILL HR669. USARK will not compromise on this fundamentally flawed Bill. Our enemies at the Defenders of Wildlife have been so threatened by what we have done that they sent out a slick propaganda piece to influence the Subcommittee, but it is to little to late. They are doomed to be crushed under the weight of the Reptile Nation.
I need one more day of intense calling to Subcommittee offices. Get everyone you can think of to call and OPPOSE HR669. Call all day long. Overwhelm Capitol Hill again! They are unbelieving that we have been able to engineer this feat, and are destroying their Bill. MAKE YOUR CALLS!
With the Greatest Respect,
Andrew Wyatt
President USARK
To make it easier here are just the names and the phone number of each member and what to say. You can copy and paste them into a word document and print it up.
1. Give your name.
2. Remind them that they are on the Subcommittee on Insular Affairs Oceans & Wildlife.
3. Tell them you want to put on record your Strong Opposition to HR669.
4. Thank them for listening to your concerns.

OK, this pisses me off, that some groups r willing to play the divide and conquer game, take exemptions and run, cowards in my dictionary, easy way out, easier to get exemptions than fight the bill. R they forgetting ferrets are already banned in CA under the injuriosu/deterious animal guise???? While many exotics are still legal there as they didn’t get injurious/detrimental label attached to them yet. These people need to stop playing this game, if feds and AR don;t get them bow, they get them later.SLIPPERY slope.Plus they r bedfellows and bedwettign with HSU$.

American Ferret Association Opposes H.R. 669
The American Ferret Association issued a position statement this week that opposes H.R. 669.

On April 19, 2009, the American Ferret Association, a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization that promotes ferrets as companion animals, issued a position statement that opposes H.R. 669 in its present form. H.R. 669 is the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act.
The AFA statement notes that restricting genuinely dangerous wildlife is desirable and it recognizes the good intentions of supporters of the bill, but the AFA objects to the wording of H.R. 669, which makes it unclear whether or not ferrets would be included in the list of animals exempted from restriction should the bill become law. The bill provides that animals that are common and clearly domesticated would be exempt from restriction, if the Secretary of the Interior deems them to be common and clearly domesticated.
“The AFA strongly opposes having to rely on such an unnecessary and vague determination — the mechanism for which is not even specified — when such a determination has already been made many times, over a period of many years, throughout the United States and around the world.”
According to the AFA statement, ferrets should be included in the list of exempted animal species because: 1) Ferrets are not wildlife; and 2) Ferrets are well-established, commonly accepted, domesticated companion animals.
Further, the AFA statement notes that the Humane Society of the United States, which supports H.R. 669, has agreed to request that ferrets be added to the list of exempted animals in the bill.
A hearing on H.R. 669 takes place on April 23, 2009, at the House Subcommittee On Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife.

{{ but the AFA objects to the wording of H.R. 669, which makes it unclear whether or not ferrets would be included in the list of animals exempted from restriction should the bill become law. }}
This isn't quite correct. We do object to the wording, but the wording is, unfortunately, VERY clear as to "whether or not ferrets would be included in the list of animals exempted from restriction." They are not included, period. Only dogs, cats, rabbits, goldfish, and several livestock species are included in the list, which makes up section 14(5)(D) of the bill.
Our advocacy efforts are focused at present on amending the bill to make sure ferrets are specifically protected from its provisions, as all "common and clearly domesticated animals," to use the language of the bill, should be. To protect cats, dogs, and rabbits by name but not ferrets (not to mention guinea pigs and other common, popular pet rodents) is unfair and discriminatory.
Thank you for bringing this issue to the attention of ferret enthusiasts.

The American Ferret Association needs to wake up and stop playing the divide and conquer game. Stop being bedfellows with an extreme animal rights group like HSU$.
You might get exempt this year, but you can get added next year. United we stand, divided we fall, all animal owners need to stick together, regardless of breed or species.
Ferrets can do more damage in the environment than many birds and reptiles, so if ferrets get exempt, it would clearly show this bill is about dirty politics and favoritism, and not real science, Of course the bill is not about real science anyway, so my advice is to stick together, all animal owners, and KILL THE HR 669 BILL.

45,000 letters is awesome. As far as phone calls is concerned, myself friends and family have been calling everyone on the committe voicing our strong oposition to hr669. We've been calling 3 times a day, morning, noon and afternoon. And for good measure we are blowing up their answering machines as I type this.

Keep up the good work friends !
There is still time to make a difference.
And Zuzana, it is not surprising that the special interest groups will sell out to "protect" their interest. Back door deals is how politics works, because the legislative folks are crooks. The ferret folks will sell out us venomous keepers in a heart beat. Why should they care ? Of course, they should care, but they will settle for the temporary reprieve to help protect themselves. And the pet stores will do the same. As will PJACK. As will the tropical fish folks, etc.
However, as reptile keepers, we probably have the most to loose. That is why the response has been so great from our group. We are standing strong, and sending one heck of a message to the legislative folks. That is due to all of the dedicated folks who have been making the effort to get folks to call, write, and EMail.
I am tremendously proud of all of the reptile folks who have come together to fight this thing.
Best Regards
John Z
