anyone out there ever hear their cobra expelling air from its lungs, almost like a cough? i know they do it as they strike, but mine dose it while at rest. just wondering if this is normal behavior for a cobra. i have been keeping bitis for a long time, not so long with elipids. thanks, Danny

Danny, that sounds like it could be a respiratory infection.
Do you have a vet you work with ? Or, a zoo where you know the reptile keepers ? If you do, it would be best to contact them as soon as possible.
You need to keep the animal warm and hydrated, and search the Experts Section here for Respiratory Infection. That should bring up past discussions about treating the problem, and what medications are used.
Some of the other folks here will probably be able to offer treatment options.
Best Regards

yes, like john said hydration is the most important thing, of course, also raise the snakes cage tempature so that the immune system is working properly, but getting in touch with a vet is the best thing, arin

ok i raised the temp, but cant find a vet anywhere that will see a venomous snake. i found that out a few months back when i had a sick rhino. the cobra is still very active, no discharge from the mouth or nose, and actully he has been doing it since i got him(about 3 months ago). i really didnt think he was sick. when my viper got sick it was very apparent that there was a problem, but not so with the cobra. hes eating fine, and very active like i said.but i dont have very much experience with elipids.i thought that making that coughing sound was just what they do sometimes. i was wondering if anyone elses cobra dose the same thing. now i am worried that he is ill. i have noticed that he dose this after he has eaten, and it is not constant.he'll do it a couple of times and then i wont hear him do it for a few days. thats what led me to believe that it wasnt an illness.i should have probibly provided this info in my first post. but by all means, please let me know if any of you still think this is an illness, then i will take it more seriously...thanks,Danny

If it's not a "pissed off" vocalization, then yes, it could be serious. Drop me a note if you need help finding care.
