Well, I thought everyone might be interested in reading this response from Virginia congressman Tom Periello to my letter re. HR669 (or should it be 666?)
I was for nearly 20 years the director of this really hip historic nonprofit organization in Charlottesville that had the grievous misfortune to be housed in a building that was owned by a Presbyterian Church. This response reminds me, depressingly, of the types of responses I used to get from them....
I'm interested in hearing (reading) yours...

Dear Mr. Boyce,
Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 669, Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act. I appreciate your taking the time to share your
thoughts on this important issue.
Nonnative species in the United States include an estimated 4500 plant and animal species and result in losses of over $100 billion annually through diminished crop yields, decreased property values, pest control and other increased operating costs, and diseases that can affect wildlife, livestock, and humans. Additionally, these species' competition with native wildlife can lead to the loss of sport, game,
and endangered species, and can even disrupt entire ecosystems. These species are introduced intentionally through the trade of exotic plants and animals, or accidentally through tourism and large cargo shipments.
The Nonnative Wildlife Prevention Act, introduced by Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo from Guam on February 4, 2009, would require the Department of the Interior to create a process for assessing the risk of
nonnative wildlife species proposed for importation. The process must include an analysis of a species' economic, environmental, and health effects in similar ecosystems, and must evaluate the likelihood of the
species' spread if it were introduced to the United States. Species not meeting the criteria established by the Department of the Interior would be prohibited from entering the United States. Although I am committed to protecting our natural heritage, our farmers, and public health, I am also aware that certain industries such as horticulturists and pet and
aquarium vendors are concerned about the impact that such regulations may have on their livelihoods. I always strive to be mindful of the unintended but heavy burdens that legislation may place on consumers and business. Should have I have the opportunity to vote on this legislation, I will keep your views in mind.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact my office. To keep informed of the work I do, please visit my website at

This response makes me very proud to be from South Carolina, as our Congressman, Mr. Brown, was one of the people who DID take heed to his actual constituants' wishes and acknowledge their concerns, rather than those of the high-paying political machines of the HSUS and other AR groups.
