anyone have tips on seeing terrestrial snakes in dark, crowded forest undergrowth, particularly at night? i know rainy seasons are great. i know to try and tread lightly. and i know a lot of it's just chance.
i've had lots of luck in the past looking through trash piles and in neat, regimented tea and rubber tree plantations, but the forest floor's left me coming up empty...any ideas for technique or equipment (e.g., what's a good headlamp for these purposes?)
also--and don't laugh too hard at me, please--but i've been idly wondering if the deet spray, the buzz off shirts, etc. i've been using in india and west africa might be detectable on the vomeronasal organ of snakes and might scan as 'human' or otherwise off-putting?
