One way would be to keep your lawn mowed and as clutter-free as possible. That way a snake or snakes don't have ready-made hiding places.

There is a commercial product called Snake-away and snake-b-gone which alledgely detures snakes from coming onto your property.
Also if you have Pine nuggets or pine mulch in your landscaping-remove it! Certain rattlesnake species such as adamanteus and S. Miliarius are attracted to it.
Remove any wood piles or stacked metal, roofing tins, etc.

I wouldn't suggest the chemicals. I can't tell you how many times I've been called in to remove a snake from a house and had to cross over that crap. Basic Ecology - if you remove the food source and the shelter the snakes won't come.
