CAPTAIN: Python kills Fla. girl, NC lawmakers weighing snake bill
Contributed by Captain Star-News - Posted: July 2, 2009 11:16:58 AM
A pet Burmese python strangled a 2-year-old girl in Florida this week, according to this article from the Associated Press.
The snake, which was more than 8 feet long, was taken away. The owner didn't have a permit for the snake.
Here in North Carolina, legislators are considering a bill that updates the rules for owning or transporting reptiles.
Senate Bill 307, which can be read here, specifies that large constricting snakes and crocodiles fall under the regulation.
It also makes it a law for constricting snakes, like the Burmese python, to be kept in an escape-proof enclosure with a lock. Information about safety protocol and escape recovery plans would have to be kept near the snake's enclosure if the bill is adopted. Crocodiles, except the American alligator, would fall under the same requirements.
The state Senate already has voted for the measure, which is working its way now through the House.

Does anyone have an update to this story? Did the examination of the 2yr olds body suggest snake or something else?
Thanks

Patrick, the investigation is still going on.
I have unconfirmed reports from some folks in Florida that the python might not have killed the little girl, and that the whole thing might have been staged as a cover up.
Guess we will have to wait a bit longer to see the results of those investigations.
Best Regards

John,
OMG!
What a freaking mess this is turning out to be and now the snake may be innocent! Again, I don't know what to say!

I was about to mention the same thing, Archie. The guy was dealing coke, hardly a fit parent. Maybe the baby was sucking up all his drug money, or maybe the baby had an unfortunate accident while they were drugged up... Too many common scenarios here... I'm going to go with Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

This was one of those situations that will not be looked at any deeper. The snake is a perfect scape goat and at the right time.If he is not guilty then I apologize, but he is a death dealer and should be publicly executed any way, he sells crack.I have no sympathy for drug dealers and have many reasons I feel this way I wont talk about here.

I totally agree with John Zegal.
I, too have heard the same rumors, that this guy accidently/ or on purpose caused the death of his daughter and tried to cover it up, i.e. blaming the snake and posed the snake with his daughter for picture purposes. If true, not only should this guy be put away (or worse) the state of Florida should seek to rectify the wrong and other's using the snake in question, for political gain and BAD publicity, for the banning of pythons, should come clean.
My two cents.
