Ban exotic reptiles before another death

Regarding "Pet python kills Florida child":
Invasive reptiles do not belong in Florida; comprehensive, meaningful legislation is needed now.
This tragedy most likely will be repeated. A call to action is needed to stop exotic pet trafficking by making it illegal to sell, trade, own or buy any exotic reptile that has the potential to kill humans, pets and native wildlife.
The toddler's death was not the exotic species' fault; it is mankind's fault. Indeed, the snake was just playing out its instinctive nature. The owner had no permit for this deadly snake. There should be no permits to own any invasive species. How many other irresponsible snake owners are out there?
Nonnative species have been introduced into habitats where they don't belong because of man's activities, be they legal or illegal, on purpose or accidental. It is illegal to release these pets in Florida, yet this is virtually impossible to enforce.
The lack of education and the complacency surrounding this issue are astounding. Our own native wildlife in Sarasota is in peril due to a growing population of exotic, invasive iguanas.
Urge our legislators to start working immediately on laws that prohibit and fine heavily those keeping selling, trading or importing invasive reptiles. Urge our local politicians to launch an extensive effort to rid our county of these exotics before the breeding populations become too large to control and the problem becomes irreversible.

While we're at it, lets ban swimming pools as well! There has been more child deaths by swimming pools than by anything else over the past 30 years.... Crazy, crazy...

The problem is that well meaning, but factually wrong folks, like this Gayle Wardner, get all stirred up with emotion, and they make a effort to go out there and get the laws changed to protect themselves and their kids from the "dangers" of pet python snakes.
It is up to you Florida herpers to counter this and not let new laws get passed.

GAYLE WARDNER
Gayle moved to Siesta Key in 1998. Since the 1970s she has been a volunteer for many organizations whose efforts have centered around tree protection, maintaining healthy urban forests, endangered species protection, air, water and noise pollution, and habitat protection. She is a staunch supporter of the World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservancy and other organizations that promote saving habitats for species in peril. Gayle received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of North Carolina. She is interested in preserving and enhancing the quality of life on Siesta Key, not only for mankind, but for all species that exist in what has become a very fragile ecosystem. Red tide is a big concern to Gayle, one that cannot and should not be “fixed” by the bandaid approach. Resources from city, county and state are needed immediately to find exacerbating causes and enhancers of red tide. She feels SKA understands the most important issues facing the Key and wants to help in improving and maintaining the quality of life for everyone who truly appreciates the gem we have in Siesta Key.
