ARGENTENEA Tegu can be kept out doors in a proper cage that it can get underground and hibernate in ,year round. They can be very tame a good lizard. It gets over 3 feet and can also have a very bad bite. The monitor can get 3 foot and also has a very bad bite.Tame reptiles are always a gamble you never know how it will go.Do I think a 11 year old can keep one. That depends on the 11 year old.The only thing I can say is only you and your parents can decide good luck. The tegu is the best option in my opinion others will agree or disagree.

I'm not a big fan of young kids owning lizards that will get large. But, as the previous post said, it depends on the kid. Start with a nice, healthy captive bred/born hatchling. Argentine black and white tegus are awesome creatures and tend to become extremely tame. I recommend Ron St. Pierre as a breeder (Florida). Savannas are hit and miss. I actually like black throated monitors but that's a lot of lizard for a 6th grader.
