Keeping a snake as a pet, is it wrong?
I am interested in wildlife conservation
but keeping a animal as a pet is it the same as keeping it captive?

Tough question. I think each person has to make this decision for themself. Personally, every snake I own is used for public education programs. I consider them ambassadors for their species and I keep no more than I need. I am comfortable with that.
There are many things that you can do though that have no impact on wild populations. You can buy captive bred animals and then start breeding them yourself. Then you can put these animals back into the reptile trade. This takes some pressure off of wild populations and at least you can feel that you are doing your part. There are too many facets of this issue to discuss here though.
There are 2 articles on this website that you should read: Collecting and Conservation, and Snakes as Pets. But then at the same time, you need to read Degenerated Science by Dean Ripa on www.BushmastersOnline.com. While it is LONG, you need to read it all to get the whole picture. These 3 articles represent opposing views. If you read them all, you can make a more informed decision about keeping captive animals and whether or not this conflicts with your conservation ethic.
Read the "About the SHHS" link at the left to see what our position on the reptile trade is.
