I was at another web site and saw a few ads for 'devenomized snakes'. What is done to the snakes to devenomize them?? Is this a permanent condition?? Or a temporary one i.e. removal of fangs that will be replaced. This must cause harm to the snakes as well...I'm assuming. Thanks for the information.

I dont know a whole lot about "venomoids" either but from what i have read it is a dangerous operation and snakes can easily die during the surgery. What exactly is done to them I am not quite sure. I do know if it is permenant it is bad because venom serves as the first part of digestion for those particular species that have venom glands. Even though they can survive in this state I am sure it is unhealthy for the snake and in my veiw the operation is inhumane. Until I read otherwise I will continue to hold my opinion.

Thank you Mojo for the information. I did not figure that it would be a good thing for the snake to experience. I appreciate you sharing the amount that you do know.

Hi y'all,
Actually, there are a couple of people that do a very good job on venemoid surgery. The entire Duvenoy's organ ie removed rather than merely severing the duct (which has been known to regenerate).
As to digestion, the couple of people I know with venemoid experience tell me that it makes little difference. Indeed, some of my snakes, when eating pre-killed don't envenomate.
I can see a venemoid snake as a legitmate, educational tool, but I don't like the idea of the operation being done for private keepers. "If ya can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen." If someone feels they must have a venemoid, they should not keep hots.
My pennies.

The was a detailed artical written recently exploring all aspects of the venomoid issue, including procedures, health of the snakes afterward, and pros and cons. It was not pro-venomoid or anti, just an overview. If C.Harper would hurry up and make it available on this sute, it may help alleiviate many of these questions.
It is unwise to assume anything about venomoids.
But, along the same lines as filthy's answer, most knowledgable and experienced venomous snake keepers have no need for venomoids, and this it is a lazy way out of a dangerous hobby. Even more, it is considered by many to be unethical and unfair to the snakes. So is keeping them in cages, really. But, it's hard to ignore the fact that people die from venomous snakebite, not venomoid snakebite. Those who discount the idea may have to give their life to their hobby someday. But those who embrace the idea of venomoids may never respect venomous snakes like they should, and will never be respected as serious hobbyists.
Too many aspects to this discussion... It will go on for a long time.
Good answer filth.
