I went to this website and looked at their snake hunting equipment. Their tongs and hooks look like midwest's products. The address is www.mavericktradingpost.com/maverick_table_of_contents.html I gave them a call and they told me that their hooks and tongs were made by midwest custom products. I am angry that we have nooow been sold out by 2 snake killing companies!!! Selling tongs to people that sell them to rounduppers is almost as bad as going and selling to them yourself. Can anyone verify this?
Thanks for your time,
Rick Peterson

There's not alot that Midwest can do about who buys their products. They are primarily a mail order company. We all know that we use the same tools as the roundup people simply because there is a limited number of manufacturers. I'm sure roundup people have ordered tongs from every single manufacturer out there.
The issue with GR is that they ATTENDED the largest roundup in the world to sell their products.
I've always known that roundup people used the same equipment that we do, but I also know that Midwest has a humane treatment ethic and doesn't condone roundups. Actually, before this incident I never would have thought that GR would have attended a roundup to profit from it.

Rick,
I can neither confirm nor deny your assertion that Midwest products were sold at the roundup. I am, however, sure that Midwest was not there selling them. Actually, "Selling tongs to people that sell them to rounduppers"...is not a very convincing argument. If it was, then bullet manufacturers would be liable at murder trials. It is one thing to sell your product and not know what its ultimate use will be. It is quite another to go to a roundup and sell your product to people who are there to support the wanton destruction of these animals. I will stand by Midwest.

Wanna make a bet on how long MCP will continue selling to these people once they know who they are and what the equipment is being used for? This can be very difficult to control if the offender is buying their widgets from a distributor that is several times removed from the manufacturer. However, I suggest that you give Midwest a chance to act on the information before you get too upset; I doubt they are aware of the situation and they would probably appreciate it if you told them.
As the other folks on this thread mentioned, there isn't a really good way to stop people from buying and misusing your products. If I sell widgets to the public, there is no effective way for me to stop someone from buying one of my widgets and using it to beat a snake to death. For that matter they could take my widget and abuse a convent full of nuns and orphans, mug a little old lady or perform unnatural sexual acts in public with the thing. There just isn't a lot I can do about that, other than refuse to sell to the offenders once they are clearly identified.
Now, if I were to pay for booth space at the annual Nun and Orphan Abuser convention and actively encourage these people to use my widgets for vile purposes, pointing out how suitable the widgets were to hold down even the largest nuns so you could abuse them more effectively, you would have a pretty good argument for my culpability.
Rattlesnake roundup @$$holes buy lots of things, such as whiskey, oversized trucks, cheap toasters, big ugly belt buckles, hair cream and occasionally (albeit rarely) personal hygiene products. They buy snake tongs, too. There's not too much we can do about that, since it is not yet legally required for all rattlesnake roundup participants to wear a large scarlet "R" on their chests and have email addresses ending in Billy-Bob.com.
I don't think anyone who makes any product can do a perfect job of keeping it from being misused. But it takes a major scumbag to buy a booth and actively sell snake catching equipment at a rattlesnake roundup when you know for a fact that it will be used for the torture and slaughter of snakes. Midwest doesn't do this. Genesis Reptiles does. Ergo, that's who we're mad at.

After doing a bit of research myself, I found out the following.
1. The products being sold by Maverick (1-800-272-8853) appear to be the cheaper Pakistani knockoffs of Midwest gear. The prices on the web site are a pretty good indication of this. They stated to me that they did not buy from Midwest, which I can believe since they are selling their tongs too cheaply. MCP gear can't be sold for those prices; it is too solidly and expensively made.
2. According to the folks at Maverick, *nobody* telephoned them to ask about who manufactured their equipment, prior to the call that was made specifically to check out Mr. Peterson's post. This is a small business as opposed to a large store, and only a few people ever answer the phone.
This really makes me wonder what is going on here. Chris, can I get an IP check on this fellow's posting location? I'm a wee bit suspicious.
Regards,
MsTT
