Hi,
its the lurkin interested non keeper..lol..
Ok i read a post today regarding a c atrox, that self envenomated that was already sick,
(sorry you lost the fella jay), and a thread on that post said that these snakes if they bite themselves they should be Ok.
But what if say a Cobra bit a Cottonmouth, i know they are very unlikely to meet but u get the idea, can one snakes venom kill another of a different species or even of the same species but from a different location..

I don't know much on the subject either, however, I have seen pictures of rattlesnakes that had been bitten by other rattlesnakes. Some had severe swelling in the face. So apparently snake venom does effect other venomous snakes, to some extent. Whether or not this can happen within the same species or how often this happens, I don't know. Anthony -- MO

I just had a litter of C. durissus dryanis born and while separating them , one struck and hit another on the neck. Though there was no swelling ( or even a sign of blood ) the bitten snake was unable to straighten out it's neck from the 'U' it immediately went into and died five days after the bite.

I have seen oreganus nail each other, from 2 localities hundreds of miles apart. There was some initial swelling as you could tell it was significant envenomation. The animal continued to survive, and the next day the swelling was gone, though that part of his body seemed sensitive for about a week. Now, if say a Naja bit and EDB or vice versa I think they would probably both perish, but, snakes with similar venom attributes might fair better against one another, say a tiger snake and a king cobra biting each other, well as long as they are seperated and dont eat each other I thing they would be fine. It depends alot on numerous factors, if organs were hit or envenomated, how close the swelling is to the brain or spine etc. Generally I think snakes with similar venom characteristics would be much more tolerable of one anothers bites as opposed to say a pit viper and a coral snake.
