Thanks for the update Paul.
Sure hope you and the others get feeling well soon.
Please continue to post here if you became sick at, or
following the show.
Right now, we know lot of the venomous vendors have had problems, and we are only 1/3 of the vendors who were at the show. Those of you on other forums, please post there and ask the same question, and then re-post the results here.
I have been playing phone tag all day with folks in the SC Department of Health, and have finally found out that SC has no laws or authority concerning testing for air quality.
Tomorrow, I will be contacting OSHA and the CDC to file complaints, and request inspections of the building. Hopefully, the Feds will be able to test the building, since the State of SC does not seem capable of / or have the authority to test for mold / fungus spores in the air there.
I hope that the Repticon folks will contact all the vendors by Email and find out just how many folks have come down with problems following the show. It is likely that the CDC and OSHA will want that information anyway, so, being ahead of the game would be in the best interest.
Everyone, please check with the folks who worked at your tables, and any folks you know who visited the show, and post here if you find that others have become sick.
Thank You
Best Regards
John Z

John,
Have you contacted the Jamil Temple and asked if they have had any complaints? They hold other events there too and was wondering if they have documented any other problems with their building.

Randal,
I have wondered about that also, however, I would prefer someone from OSHA and the CDC be the ones to ask the Shriners those questions.
Most likely, if I were to ask, the Imperial Wizard of the Shriners (or whatever he is called), would probably lie about there being any complaints in the past, as, if he admits there have been any, then he incriminates the Shriners for knowing aobut the current problem, and not doing something to fix it.
I tried to find an online calendar of the yearly events there, to see just how long the AC might have been shut off. But, they have a crappy little website, and no calendar of upcoming or past events that I can find online.
We will see just what interest OSHA and CDC take. If that does not work, then perhaps one the of the Columbia TV News stations will take a interest. Even though SC supposedly does not have air quality laws in place, it could be that someone in the Health Department there might take a interest if the TV News folks became involved.
Best Regards

I know that there is a gun and knife show there this coming weekend, though I honestly don't know any of those vendors, so I would not know who to follow up with to find out if any of THOSE vendors get sick afterwards. I haven't spoken to LeRoy Adams, whose table I shared(yes, it was in the venomous section, too)to see if he or any of the others who were at our table have gotten sick, or it if was just me out of that whole group. I plan to speak with him, though, so I can find out.
I found it odd that DHEC(SC's Dept of Health and Environmental Control)has no protocol in dealing with molds or other potential contaminants inside facilities which are open to the public. OSHA mainly deals with workplace environments, so unless you are employed by the facility, I'm not sure what they would be able to do. I do know that whenever something like this has occurred in a school, with an unusual number of students and/or staff becoming ill with the same symptoms at the same time, DHEC HAS been involved in the investigation.

John,
I understand you are talking about people's healths, etc.
And I, or no one would like to attend an event where there is possible health hazards, however, have you thought you might also piss the Shriners off and they tell Repticon NO MORE SHOWS THERE?
That could possibly put that Columbia Hot Show in jeopardy and make the Elrod's have to scramble for another venue, and there might NOT be another venue in the area that's big enough or would allow Venomous snakes. Be careful my friend, you wouldn't want to be the cause for the end of the Columbia show. Just a heads up.

I probably talked with 6 or 7 different departments of the SC Department of Health & Enviornment, and finally found the branch called Air Quality. However, they were the ones who informed me that SC has no laws concerning private buildings like that. And, they are the ones that told me to contact OSHA. I am sure if this was a school, there would be more interest. But, a school is also a government agency, and Jamil is a private building.
That is why the News folks might need to be brought in.
Randal, the website you listed does not seem to have a future event calendar for Jamil.
As far as pissing off the Shriners, I really do not care if they get pissed off or not. As building owners, they have a legal obligation to provide a healthy building and not endanger the folks who vend there, or attend shows there. If they do not want to do that, then it would be better for Repticon to find a new, and safer venue anyway. We have until March 13 & 14 before the next show. I am not trying to cause the end of the Columbia Show, I am trying to do something about a problem at the Columbia Show that made a large number of vendors sick. That is far more important than keeping the Shriners happy. If the building needs mold abatement, it needs mold abatement. And the sooner they fix the problem, the better.
That is why I have suggested that Repticon do a EMail pole of everyone who attended the show, or, vended the show, that they have Email addresses for, and find out just how many folks became sick. That would go a long way to seeing just how bad the problem was, and would also give them a lot of ammunition in getting the Shriners to repair the problems.
Best Regards

Symptoms of Fungal Exposure (Mycotoxicosis).
"Respiratory distress, coughing, sneezing, sinusitis
Difficulty swallowing, choking, spitting up (vomiting) mucous, inflammation of lung tissu, burning in the throat and lungs, wheezing, shortness in breath, coughing, etc."
Those are the symptoms that most of the folks who got sick have experienced.
The fact that the symptoms came on so fast indicates that the level of toxins in the air was very high.

John,
I agree with you 100% that it's a concern for the vendors/public.
