Does anyone know how they manipulate Atractaspis in order to milk them (and please resist the urge to say very carefully)? What is done differently from other snake species?
Thanks

Stilletos are normally extracted from using pipettes over the fangs while under restraint Jim or Kristen Harrison may want to chime in as they do this on a regular basis. We do not have these animals here.
Hope thtis helps.

I asked someone one time that has done venom sampling and analysis with actractaspis about how they are milked. Obviously, they cannot be pinned like other snakes. The method they used was to sedate the snakes and pipette the large fang while they were under.

I took my info down months ago because I rarely, if ever, post anymore....after probably a few thousand posts. I won't put it back up. Delete my reply and profile if you don't like it, Al. If Chris and Karl don't want me to post here when I have an answer to a pertinent question, then I won't. But, I won't get bullied around by a mod who rarely answers questions on a site he moderates. Delete if you will.

Tube and then pipette the fangs. We do not sedate because it can cause problems for the animal if done on a regular rotation. Very small yield but not that hard to to do. When we get our computer fixed I will try to post a video of extraction from Atractaspis on our You Tube channel.

Thank you for the help. Will be interesting to see how you milk the little darlings. Thanks to all who responded as well.

Dear Al,
Were you requesting that I fill in my profile? I was not sure. If you were, and need it for the records, let me know and I will email it to you personally. Otherwise I do not post personal info where anyone can access. I am not being a jerk, just cautious.

Thanks Jim!
Speaking of extracting....as today was rotation for big cobras and juvenile snakes...in the holiday spirit I have decided I am not overly thankful for juvenile terciopelo! Little spring-loaded bastards.
