ALERT: S373 Python Ban Goes to Hearing
S373 aka ‘The Python Ban’ will receive a Hearing before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee Chaired by Barbara Boxer (D-CA) on December 3, 2009. The bill sponsor is Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL). If passed as written it would Ban all snakes in the family Pythonidae, placing them on the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act. That is ALL 40 species of pythons! This action would stop all import, export and interstate transport. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) took definitive steps yesterday toward lobbying Senator Nelson to add Boa Constrictor to the bill as well. HSUS has publicly called for an end of reptile ownership nationwide for years.
As we understand it right now there will be eight bills heard by the committee with only one witness to testify on all eight. USARK does not anticipate that there will be additional witnesses called. This seems to be an effort to move through as many bills as possible in as short a time as possible. We will know more soon.
USARK is opposed to legislating any animals on to the Injurious Wildlife List of the Lacey Act. This should be a science and policy driven debate. As it stands now the science is being “cherry picked” to support political expediency. Just yesterday an independent group of scientists called the USGS study being used by HSUS and others to justify a ban, “unscientific”.
As always USARK is providing the best, most timely information available on this issue to the Reptile Nation. Not sure if it will help, probably not but maybe someone should state how many people are attacked by pythons VS Dogs.
Not sure of the Python stats but
Dogs: 2% of American population is injured by attacking dogs.
That's over 4 and half million people a year.
26 people die.
That beats venomous snakes bites and deaths along with Pythons...
Oh, I get it, dog are domesticated so that makes it ok!

Scott HSUS DOES NOT CARE ABOUT WHO KILLED WHAT THE AGENDA IS THE BAN OF ALL REPTILES.i SHIPPED SOME SNAKES THE OTHER DAY TO NORFOLK vA i WAS INFORMED YOU CAN NOT EVEN OWN A REPTILE THERE, OF ANY KIND.This is an agenda set years ago that has been playing out in front of all of us for years.I may be against the laws that usark is helping with at the same time they are our only hope as well.It is easy to hate a snake not a puppy. This country has lost its momentum for advancement and needs to pull in and rethink its agenda. We are a small group of people most of us open the doors for old ladys we vote take our kids to school .Most of us still would fight and die for our great nation most teach our children good values and give a dollar at 7-11 for breast cancer.Yet we are painted in a different light. How many stories make front page when you do any of these things but have a garter snake get out and it may go nation wide it is nuts.People who own large or any snakes for that fact who have taken them in public or still do aside from an educational show are doing us a dis service as well.Snakes as pets belong at home in there cage period. It is not cool to carry your boa around your shoulder to show off.You are a fool to think that it is .The problem is we are easy targets when joe blo kills his step child and says his snake did it.90% OF THE PLANET EARTH HATES SNAKES AND ALWAYS WILL ALWAYS.Ok I am ranting and lost my point long ago sorry guys I just hope my grand kids will get to enjoy there terrestrial viper collection as grand dad does.

Barbara Boxer is a hideous excuse for a politician. I think she was involved with Dianne Fienstien and some others in the "assault weapons ban" years ago where they literally flipped through some gun catalogs and picked out the ones that they thought looked threatening! With no consideration to magazine capacity, caliber, nothing. Just on how it looked. And it passed. She's probably flipping through a snake book as you read this....

This is the same Barbara Boxer who tried to get COFFEE and all other caffeinated drinks declared a controlled substance a few years ago, in the same catagory as Oxycontin and Morphine. She is a fine example of the current "Nanny State" mindset if ever there was one, politicians who believe that they must ban or control EVERYTHING to protect us from ourselves.
And yes, Pictigaster, these politicians ARE going after dogs. There have been several bills on the Federal level which would have declared anyone with two or more sexually intact dogs a "commercial dog breeder" and would have required such people to obtain and comply with the regulations of a USDA license, or risk having their animals taken. The intent was to force everyone in the country to spay/neuter every dog, or risk having those animals seized. The HSUS and of course, PETA, were soundly behind these bills, which were only defeated because they were attached to other bills that failed. Now, these same people are pushing those same mandatory spay/neuter bills through at the local and state levels, and they have a lot more money now to get this done. On top of that, we have BSL, laws being passed right and left to regulate or ban ownership of certain kinds of dogs, based entirely on the dogs' LOOKS. More and more cities and counties across the country are passing pet limit laws, which only allow a given household or property to house a small number of animals of ANY kind. The very same people-the HSUS, API, and PETA, who are going after reptiles are behind all of these laws, as well. They don't want us to have reptiles; they don't want us to have dogs or cats or pigs or chickens or livestock, either. They do not want people to keep animals of ANY kind, for any reason whatsoever, and the sooner that ALL animal owners wake up and realize this fact, and stop with that "us and them" mentality when it comes to people who have animals that are not the same kind you have, the better we'll be able to stand against these dangerous cultists.
And yes, the Animal Rights movement IS very much a cult, a very widespread, rich and dangerous one, which like radical elements of some established religions, funds its own terrorists and even hires them for important positions.

You are so right my sister is one of them she supports all the animal rights issues .To day she would not stop on me getting my pit neutered .My wife got this adba dog and is a pure high dollar dog might weigh 50 pounds when grown a good dog.She has no idea what she is supporting my wife was the same now she knows the truth. The government has no business involved in the private ownership of animals or property .They have issues that might even be solved when they stop interveening in the private tax paying sector ..I for one do not need a baby sitter this whole movement scares the hell out of me.It has been shown that they will persist and pass all the laws they want. Most of this is based on the allmighty dollar paid by lobbyists to achieve there agenda and has nothing to do with our safty or the protection of a species. The sad part is in the long run we will lose.My city annexes large tracts of land with out a vote .They tactically draw in high dollar homes for tax dollars.some are as far as 5 or 6 miles outside the city limits with farms inbetween. Then tell the farms they cant have farm animals in the city limits.Where will it stop .The money is the base of it all. They annex the land and promise city water city paved roads do not do it then annex another section after doing no improvements to what they already annex. It has got out of hand and there seems to be no way to stop the madness.Ok I am ranting again sorry.

Well I don't keep "Hots" (which I would love to work with a few different species I like) but I do have a nice well maintained collection of potential breeder Ball python morphs along with a few other odds and ends. I have been into reptiles all my life and have had everything from Burms to Alligators.
I do have a license in my state to sell reptiles but I'm mearly a hobbiest (like most herpers) which truely injoy the animals first over money. Although it sure would be nice to bring in an extra income one day from working with something I enjoy.
Each and every one of your post took the words right out of my mouth. These elected officials are pushing their weight around and cherry picking easy targets to pass laws on and claim they're doing right by the people. Just like the so called assult weapons ban. It's all about passing laws which make them feel good and kisses the butts of the animal rights lobbiest that send them money.
I have been on the phone and computer for the past month sending out messages to whome ever about these bills. I live in west central FL and know for a fact that no "Boid" could survive a very cold winter in my region of the state, much less the entire southern portion of the country.
