They sure can although its not likely. A bite that involves injection of venom is certainly not going to be a pleasant experience despite the chance of death being remote.
Welcome aboard. Lots of good people here so stick around, make some friends and learn from those who may have more experience than you.

Parrish, there was a woman who died of a copperhead bite last year. There was a man who died of a copperhead bite a few years ago. It is very rare for the bite to cause death, however, it does happen from time to time.

The man who died was a dpt sherrif and he died on june 24 o6 broad band copperhead.I myself almost bought the big one from a bite.Mild is such a relative phrase when dealing with venom.Atrox venom is mild compared to say a mamba yet both will kill and have. The problem As I see it is people get the impression that mild means bee sting or thorn in the finger, not flesh eating necrosis.

The bottom line answer to the question asked is:
YES
Everything else is just extra superfluous information.
Copperheads can kill.

Yes, the bottom line is Yes.
However, a bit of superfluousness is a lot more fun, and might even be interesting and even educational to some folks who enjoy trivia.

"However, a bit of superfluousness is a lot more fun, and might even be interesting and even educational to some folks who enjoy trivia."
I don't disagree with you, John.
I just wanted to make sure that the correct answer stood out and did not get mistaken.
More and more, I am hearing about "this bite is less dangerous than that bite" and "a bite from this won't kill you ..."
Last week I heard a father tell his kids that a bite from a Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake won't kill you, it will just make you real sick. Really? Losing a finger to necrosis is just "real sick"?
While Copperhead and Pigmy bites may SEEM less serious than a bite from a Canebrake or an Eastern Diamondback, they still do an incredible amount of tissue damage which is often PERMANENT!
No venomous reptile bite should be considered less than life threatening and each one should receive prompt medical treatment.
I am just trying to make sure that the real correct answer shows up in the thread. Enjoy and superfluous away.

I also hear that bite mis-information repeated way too much Karl, and it is always disturbing. What is bad, is that it is spread now days more than ever on internet forums that are run by folks who have no idea what they are talking about.
As a reptile book collector, you know like I do, that even some very famous Herpetologists have contributed to the mild bite idea in their books. Most likely, those folks were never bitten by a copperhead or pygmy rattlesnake.
I think one of the best things that we can do here at this site, is to continue to post articles and photos that show just how much damage the bite from a copperhead or pygmy rattlesnake can do, and hope that folks read those articles and look at the photos. I sure know that the photos scare me, and look like something that I would never want to go through.
Good examples from this site are:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/373
http://healthwise-everythinghealth.blogspot.com/2009/10/copperhead-snake-bite.html
Also, we can hope that folks like Dr. Sean Bush continue to publish TV shows that show just how bad snake bites can be for folks.
Best Regards
