Dear Mr. Chambliss,
I oppose S373 because it is being presented to the American people under false pretenses and it will cost taxpayers jobs. It does nothing to support conservation and goes far beyond what is necessary to achieve the desired result of the intended purpose of the bill.
The state of Florida has a problem with feral Burmese Pythons.
An employee of the USGS has written a pseudoscientific paper that has not been peer reviewed and lies somewhere between bad science and downright lies. The bill claims that constricting snakes are going to take over the US from New England to the San Francisco bay area. The paper was written with the specific purpose of getting S373 passed. This is nothing short of FRAUD by the USGS. The bill adds 9 constricting snakes to the lacey act as injurious species. One of these 9 occurs naturally within 50 miles of the US border. If they were going to take over the US they would have crawled 50 miles sometime within the last fifty thousand years.
National Geographic even calls bullshit on this issue - http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/news/chiefeditor/2009/12/547.html
I am a published author on the subject of herpetology, the past president of a herpetological society and have 30 years experience in the husbandry of reptiles.
S373 is totally based in fantasy, it is overly broad and unconstitutional, and it is based in a pure lie. Bill Nelson, the idiot that contrived this crap bill is only looking to line his own pocket with Federal money by making a Florida problem a Federal issue.
Pythons are not taking over Washington. There is not a need to ban them on a federal level.
What you can keep as a pet is a states right issue. Please keep Bill Nelson from Stealing Federal Money and Oppose S373.
If you would like to discuss this, please feel free to call me.

Surely your joking Chad! Tell me you didn't send that letter with the curse words in there.
That letter will be tossed if you did.
You have to keep it professional and NOT let your emotions take over.

Surely you don't think those letters get read. They get dumped into two piles -- opposed to, or in favor of.
Notice the first words?

You folks need to keep in mind, that if you write letters, and they go to the Washington address, they will get delayed by being checked for anthrax, etc.
It is best to send written letters to your State Office of the Senators & Representatives,, or, better yet, FAX the letters, as that spits out a sheet of paper right there in his office, and is more likely to be read.
Best Regards

Dear Mr. Crawford:
Thank you for sharing your views regarding nonnative-invasive species, and the commercial trade of pythons. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to take this opportunity to respond to your concerns.
Nonnative wildlife species, like Burmese pythons, could cause great damage to threatened species and their habitat because they have no natural predators. On February 3, 2009, Senator Bill Nelson (R-FL) introduced S. 373, which would amend title 18 of the United States Code to include pythons as an injurious animal. Furthermore, this legislation would prohibit pythons from being shipped or imported into the United States. S. 373 was referred to the Committee on Environment and Public Works where it awaits further action. Although I am not a member of this committee, I will work with my colleagues from the Florida delegation and the Department of the Interior to remove invasive species like Burmese pythons from Florida.
It is an honor and privilege to serve the people of the great State of Florida in the United States Senate. I take great pride in being a native Floridian, and I look forward to the tremendous opportunity to better the lives of all Floridians. I assure you I will work hard to represent our state to the best of my ability in the U.S. Senate. If I can be of any further help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
George S. LeMieux
United States Senator
They are so concerned about protecting native species?
I'm sure we all can call their BS on that!

My short reply as I know this will probably never really make it to him.
As long as you and your colleagues are fair and don't become hypocritical. I need to see cat's and dogs on a ban bill real soon! One little girls dies and Bill Nelson wants to ban pythons however! 4 1/2 million people are attacked by dogs each year and 26 people die from those attacks! Cat's kill anything that moves and is much worse than constrictors, please don't be hypocritical is all I ask!
