I was wondering if anybody could tell me which of these two books is better: Herper's Life List or Snake Lovers' Lifelist and Journal. I live in utah and would prefer a book with good pictures of the rattlesnakes that live here. any input would be helpfull. Thanks

Neither of the books you mention will have very many decent pictures of rattlesnakes from your area.
I would recommend Manny Rubio's book: Rattlesnake! Portrait of a Predator.

Rubio's book is a good one with a bunch of good pictures.I just picked one up on ebay for 20 bucks like new.I think your state does not allow rattlesnake capture I would check the laws.

When you say capture you mean keeping what you catch right? If so, the only thing I do is catch and handle the snake and temperarely put it in a catch box of my own design that has a plexiglass front for viewing. I don't keep what I catch. the longest I hold the snake is at most three or four days for viewing ( the usual lenght of our camping trips). I would like to note that all this is done when we are out camping, I do not hold the snake at my home. When we pack up to leave I release the snake in the same spot that I found it. I guess I got off subject though, I had to clear up what I was doing. Thanks for your advise on the book.

That is ok I guess but by the law is still not allowed. Not trying to be an ass.The problem is we are in a state of attack from all sides as far as legal issues go.For someone here to give you advice on finding and captureing a venomous snake in Utah is as well a violation of that states laws. When a states animals are protected that means from molestation of any kind even placeing them in a box for a day a hour or even one second. It is a violation of state law.Photographing the animals with out moveing them is your best bet.The state you live in has been known to monitor this site for the exact activity you are involved in.Snakes start moveing in march in most areas Good luck and stay legal.

You CAN legally collect rattlesnakes in Utah.
You must obtain a permit though.
