Charlie Foley
Vice President, Development
Animal Planet's vice president of development Charlie Foley signed on for his third tour of duty at Discovery Communications in September 2007, when he was named to his current position. In this role, Foley oversees program development for the network and is responsible for the conceptualization and creation of series, stunts, specials and other programming initiatives. Since beginning this tenure, Foley has developed the hit series RIVER MONSTERS and WHALE WARS, which, respectively, place as the first- and second-best performing series in Animal Planet history. Both series average more than a million viewers per episode and return for new seasons in 2010. Last year, WHALE WARS was recognized with a Television Academy Honor for "television with a conscience."
Foley has also developed several other signature series and specials for the network, including the highly rated MONSTERS INSIDE ME; ANIMAL PRECINCT, which ran for six seasons and yielded eight spin-off series; and JOCKEYS, a groundbreaking docusoap which premiered in 2008 to critical acclaim. In addition, Foley developed the upcoming mini-series FATAL ATTRACTIONS.
Foley's prior posts at Discovery Communications were with TLC and Animal Planet as executive producer and director of development. Foley created, wrote and was one of Animal Planet's executive producers on the most-watched special in Animal Planet history - the two-hour DRAGONS: A FANTASY MADE REAL in 2005, for which Foley was nominated for a Primetime Emmy as writer and executive producer in the outstanding animation category.
Before re-joining Discovery in 2007, Foley took the better part of a year off to travel around the world. He began his television career at National Geographic and has also spent years working in the independent production community developing and working on shows for the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, National Geographic, Disney, PBS, and the UK's Channel 4. He has been honored with numerous industry accolades.
Foley graduated from Colby College with a degree in English & Creative Writing. He is based in New York where he lives with his wife and daughter.
