I would love to hear from Randal Doug John Z Rob Tim Cole and a few others like Jim harrison on what they believe our chances are and how to create a law to protect us from the onslaught of anti bills.OH i FORGOT AL,As the most respected guys in the field what ideas you may have on this subject.Tom Crutchfield, would also be a awesome asset in this.As of now the concerns are very real.If a law was created to protect us it might be enough to save the hobby nation wide.Other countries are also haveing the same problems as well.If I left your name out I still mean you as well. What is the answer or is there one.

The only logical prediction is that, eventually, keeping even such "exotic" pets as hamsters will probably be greatly restricted.
No matter what bill may pass in the next 2 or 3 years regarding reptile keepers..
Logically, I think, our hobby's days are numbered.
Take Care,
-John Mendrola.

I'm afraid we don't have one. I believe, as has already been stated, that we will be legislated out of existence. My state, NY, is already shut down, as are a number of others. It's just a matter of time. How grim!

I feel our future is very bleak, I would imagine that marajuana will be legalized in more states than keeping venomous reptiles. Its a really sad future.

Although I'm not overly optimistic i still have to believe we will save our hobby and i truly believe that. We've made so many strides and the economic undoing of many businesses should be enough to wake up those who are passing these ridiculous laws. Our numbers are many but we have utterly failed in being a fairly apathetic community. Additionally, we are very disjointed - if we could pool our numbers together, get on the same page, and then make the necessary connections with legislatures, it could be done. Too many bad apples lurk amongst us and that, too, has really killed it for for those who are responsible. Time and time again idiots abound and I really can't blame lawmakers for passing such stringent laws....just take a few minutes to paruse the various forums. I still think we need to look at how the falconry community saved its past time. Despite law after law passing to ban ownership of herps, falconers have been basically untouched. Why? Because they were proactive in protecting their hobby. They initiated very stringent laws/protocols for becoming a falconer and worked closely with state and federal agencies. Although its an apples to oranges scenario, they do provide a nice case study for looking outside of the box to come up with a solution to protect one's rights. I've got a lot more to say but need to rush off to a study site. Will share more later.

I see it that all states will eventually have some form of ban or system in place. It is inevitable. How restrictive that system is will be up to the exotic animal community. Unite and address the real problems on a mature level and reach a workable compromise. Complain and do nothing, and have the animals banned outright. Really there is not a lot or gray area. As they say in the lottery, you’ve gotta be in it to win it. It will come, make no mistake about that. It will boil down to; do we want to be the one who forge the path for this to follow, or do we want to simply be run over as it comes anyway?

I somewhat agree with you Doug. (imagine that)
When this comes down the only thing it will do is drive this hobby underground.
Just think, we will be a small network, have secret passwords, use ciphers to advertise snakes, and maybe, just maybe, get to have and wear a secret decoder ring!
Really, we need to fight fire with fire, at least to delay the inevitible. But I thinks it's coming.

More likely than not ,goverment will create some kind of legislation to protect us from our selves. Only zoos and reconized instituions will get a free pass. And in a lot of instances there is a great deal of animal neglect in these places. To those that think a paycheck or diploma makes them more qualified just reflects stupidity. Everyone can contribute if they have the desire to learn, and it cannot be disputed that the private sector has brought more to the table than so called organized instituions. If legislation is created it handicaps conservation. On the other hand there is alot of collectors that taint the reputation of the serious collectors. There should be zero tolerance for those free handling cowboys, unsafe cage setups ,and unethical morph breeding. Which I have seen this in the zoos also. In the private sector I have seen collectors expend there own time, effort and finances to care for all kinds of animals. I have also seen snakes deprived of food, and eggs of endangerd species tossed in the freezer, because it was not a calculated breeding,in the zoo community. There is NO excuse for that.Everyone will have to work together.
