After years of collecting large boas and pythons, and many collubrids, I am finally considering buying my first venomous snake. I like gaboon vipers and eyelash vipers, but i do not know how docile they are (I would prefer a docile snake since it would be my first dangerous reptile). Another thing that I would like advice on, is if keeping snakes the snake that i personally catch in the wild would be a good idea? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, read every single word on these websites: http://www.venom.herpkeepers.com and http://www.kingsnake.com/venom101 Then get in touch with someone who keeps the species you want to acquire and let them show you how to properly handle/care for/medicate the animals. Spend enough time around keepers to KNOW which animal is right for you before you get it. Be careful, this is some serious stuff you're thinking about dealing with. Best of luck to you and if you tell us your general area we could probably recommend an experienced person in your area to train under.

On top of what chad said I would like to say that you may want to consider a venomous that is local to where you live or atleast a native species to your country, for purposes of anti-venom if you were ever unfortunate enough to get bitten. For example if you live in the U.S. and are bitten by a Crotalus species your odds of getting anti-venom and proper treatment may be better (and should be) than if you were bitten by a "less dangerous" exotic species. Just my 2 cents.
Be careful and goodluck.
