Jamie, if you snag any Water Snakes drop me a line! My Red-Belly male is gettin' pretty "anxious", to quote Beetlejuice! I haven't even seen anything DOR yet or seen any shed skins. Hopefully I'll come across something with scales during my week off for Spring Break.

Well, I personally haven't seen anything unless you count a big male Broadhead skink that was underneath an old dogfeed sack in the yard, but I do know that they're out and about. A friend of mine, who does paint and body work on my old cars(I'm a Studebaker nut, by the way), called and said that a mutual acquaintance of ours had caught a "water rattler". I know the guy enough to know that he's one of those ignoramuses that will argue with a stop sign, and we've already been through this whole "water rattler" argument before. He insists that the swamp near his house is infested with these things, which he claims are a cross between a rattlesnake and a "water mocassin", that get to be 12-13 feet long, chase people and can kill you in 15 seconds. I've dared him to actually show me one that isn't a regular, familiar native snake. So, he calls and says he's caught a six-footer that's mean as heck, will come after you, yada yada yada. I tell him, bring it on. He shows up with a fifty-pound dog food sack, warning me to "stay back" as I'm itching to open it and see what's inside. One look confirms my suspicions-ordinary run-of-the-mill Black Rat, about four feet long. So, I just reach in and pick it up, earning my car buddy a $10.00 bet from the guy who'd caught the snake; they'd made a bet on the phone that I'd just reach in and pick the snake up, with the catcher swearing I would not be able to do that and survive. It's not even an aggressive snake, very docile for a Rat Snake. The idiot swore its head was much bigger when he caught it and it was also two feet longer. I guess it shrank upon contact with the few remaining nuggests of "Diamond Hi-Pro". He(naturally it's a male) is in good condition, though, and appears to have had a few meals in him, including a really large recent bulge, so he's been out of hibernation for awhile. Nice snake-should make a good educational snake for my presentations to the young'uns.

I'm also in North Ga. So far a Midland Water snake, a couple of little Brown snakes, a Canebrake (Broke the hook) and let the Black Rat that AgkistrodonComplex found go in the woods behind my house.

I'm in north PA, just below the NY border.
To my absolute astonishment, I flipped a rock and found a Redbellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata). We're still six to seven (or, gag, eight) weeks away from our last killing frost. Hopefully, the little guy won't stray too far from it's rock for a while.

Here in Eastern NC i've seen snakes moving since late February... abt a half dozen ribbon snakes, couple of black racers, couple of banded watersnakes and a couble of cottonmouths... that was just casual observation. I haven't had time to really look. My Weimaraner found a couple of ribbons in Feb...Lol!

On Sunday I was trimming the bushes (more like clearing brush, actually) and decided that I would do a few more and then try to find the spot I've been hearing frogs calling from. Within a minute I found a rough green snake ! That made the day, especially since my hunt didn't even turn up a tadpole. Hardly big game, but a nice find none the less.

I was talking to a group of fourth graders last Thursday, looking at some impressive Rana hecksheri tadpoles, when the group panicked. While my back was turned to the water (looking at the kids) a cute little Nerodia fasciata swam up behind me. I caught it to show to the kids, and I must say that was the CALMEST wild snake that I have ever handled. I ended up holding on to it to show the other two groups before I let it swim calmly away.
