That HAS been my experience with Nerodia; that's why I keep 'em and breed 'em, that and the potential for some really interesting un-tapped genetic morphs. Unfortunately, I don't live in a Water Snake-friendly place. There's virtually no permanent standing water anywhere, no little creeks or streams, just one river which has only one public-access point, and that is a dangerous notorious gang/drug dealer hang-out no sane person would go near. Our one lake is so developed that you'd be trespassing to get to the shore.
We're supposed to get a round of thunderstorms here Thursday evening, so if they move through and the house is still left standing(these are supposed to be some nasty storms, with tornadoes and stuff, as a strong cold front hits our 90-degree heat), I'm thinking of doing a bit of road cruising to see what might have been stirred up. Road cruising and unexpected encounters in the backyard seem to be my best bets for finding snakes. I still haven't seen anything other than the skink and that one Rat Snake that someone else caught. Even flipping tin hasn't turned up anything. It's like it went from being too cool to too HOT in one week.

Yesterday AgkistrodonComplex and I found an Eastern Garter, 4-5 Red belly water snakes, 1 Mid-land water snake, a Eastern Fence lizard, 3 Southeastern 5 lined skinks, a bark scorpion, a Mud turtle, and I think thats it. Was a very successful day.

Just spent an idyllic Easter weekend herping in Hyde. First snake I saw was a neonate eastern king. Plenty of interesting water snakes - red-bellieds, Carolinas and bandeds, incl. one large banded with a blood-red belly. One pretty little cottonmouth, and a multitude of turtles of all sizes - eastern muds, yellow bellies, painteds, snappers, musk and spotteds. The only big disappointment of the trip was a large, freshly-killed red-phase pigmy on Easter Sunday morning. Intense bummer. However, a pile of old carpet near the road held two really pretty adult corn snakes. Also enjoyed a very satisfying seafood platter in Fairfield.

I was out today tracking a really BIG boar on our ranch, and I pulled a Agkis piscivorus leucostoma from a stream that runs through our property, about a ft and a half to two ft long, beautiful.

Went out today and saw a Northern Water snake eating a frog. I also saw 4 Southeastern five-lined skinks, lots of frogs, tadpoles, and a Box turtle that I see every time I go into his part of the woods.

Saw a big black rat snake crossing the road by my house this morning. It was moving pretty quick, so I didn't stop to move it, I just slowed and watched it cross.
