I'm looking for a good, broad (but concise) overview of the field over the centuries. SSAR has a good pamphlet on American herpetologists. I'm looking for something similar, but more global--something that would run from Mithridates to Redi to Calmette on up to now. Anybody know of a volume or essay that has quite that scope? (I have the first of Kraig Adler's 2 Volume Contributions, but am looking for something a bit more digestible - less exhaustive and exhausting.) Any tips would be appreciated.

Adam, something like that would be a great find, however, I do not know of anything that has been published.
You might try Googling "History of Herpetology" as that will bring up some interesting results that might be of use to you.
Best Regards
