I have a 4ft male FWC living in a 20gal long tank right now. I just got a 55gal because I know thats too small, and I was thinking of setting it up to be a half water setup with a small submersible filter behind stacked rocks to make a waterfall type thing and perhaps a small submersible heater to get the water a little warmer. On the land half I was gonna put a den or habba hut hide and plenty of plant cover as well as grapevine in case for any reason he decides to bask or climb. For substrate I was going to blend Eco Earth, Forest Floor and some terrarium moss.
I was hoping to get some opinions and advice before I start setting it up. I own other reptiles and know snakes can knock stuff over and mess things around, so I wont go crazy with decorations but just the general ideas.

Honestly- The simpler the better with these snakes. The foul the water very quickly and will make quick work of your waterfall rocks.
As high maintenance as these snakes are, I would suggest a simple substrate of newspaper or aspen and a cat litter pan for soaking. Hide box and a basking site.
If you really want to let it swim, plop it in the tub once a week. 99% of the time they will just stay in the tub and swim around. Ensure you block off any escape routes, including the toilet lid. They are usually not happy about being pulled from the tub. I have found the trick is to let all the water out first, then come back for him.
Good luck. Fun animals, just horribly messy.

I agree with Doug, the simplier, the better. I had an adult years a go at a zoo I worked at, and in one day, I had to clean it's cage 6 times! As I was leaving at the end of the day, he pooped again! I went home...
besides, they are very strong snakes and will move rocks and other cage furniture around with ease.

I never kept FWC. But I have Ringed water cobras. They are probaly similar as far as size and keeping since they are large semi aquatic snakes. The best is news paper, and a large water basin. Newspaper is easier to clean when a large snake craps. Also they tend to go quite often and smear it all over the cage. I clean with a bleach water solution, and never had a problen. also big heavy snakes like that will throw substrate and decor all over and get it in the water. Keep it simple. and you will avoid many health problems with snakes. I also have sevral indigos which are large and I keep them the same way for the same reason. The snakes hygine is the first thing to think of.
