I know this subject comes up here from time to time and is usually handled with the same enthusiasm as a visit to the proctologist. I am not trying to debate its effectiveness or reliability but its practicality. I am NO expert on the subject but curious where many of us would draw the line between beneficial and not practical. This site lends itself to many levels of experts. "IF" the science of Self-Immunization (SI) were to be proven and perfected at what point would you consider it beneficial for your level of practice?
I would Self Immunize if:.....
If it would preserve nearly all life (99.9%) and greatly minimize any short or long term site damage.
If it would preserve nearly all life (99.9%) but had little effect on short or long term site damage.
If it had little effect on over all survivability but greatly minimized any short or long term site damage.
I would SI even if it had little positive effect because any benefit is better than none.
I would SI if it were premeasured/mass marketed, cheaper and more readily available than stocking my own antivenin.
I would/would not SI depending on the frequency I handled venomous snakes (everyday, x2 week, once a month, etc.).
I would/would not SI depending on my level of confidence in my handling ability.
I would/would not SI depending on what species I would be handling.
I would never SI.
I know there are many of you that know a great deal more about SI than I do and can easily pick apart my question. Again, my intent is not to debate how it works or its reliability but when/where you would consider it a benefit (if at all) for your level of practice. At least its not another venomoid post.
Thanks

Given that I would have to immunize myself against dozens of species and subspecies, I would not do it at all. If I worked with a single species from a single locality, I would still then have to weigh the risks against the odds of my being bitten. So, I would still not do it.
