My stance on anonymous posters is well known. I will vouch for both Mr. Friede and Mr. Bud. They've forgotten more than most on this forum will ever know.

self sticker....
Never go to the hospital! bit hunderds a times, I dont car!
Why don't you keep Death Adders anymore? "cuz aussie elapids cause anaphalaxis sir"!
Why don't you extract from vipers or pit vipers? "cuz, when ya self stick yerself ya git blisters, an tissue loss sir!"
Any of these statements ring a bell??
Are you that terrified of death, and are too much of a simpleton to learn snake handling well enough to keep the snakes you keep without self stickin. Don't fear death so much, learn how to stay alive with skill, knowhow, experience and intelligence. Or maybe you fear life without everyone else thinking you are unique. well your not, cause at least Mr. Haast had a reason to do it, you are just pretending to do research....go paint a ceiling!
a different anonomous!

Just curious to find out what mr. bud and gang have forgotten that the rest of us will never know? 30 years of experience and being bitten hundreds of times is not experience.... it's incompetence!

why are you the way you are. the only thing you've mastered is ticking off a lot of people. i think i'm speaking for everone also. i'm new to this site and i'm learning, just like you did when you first started, and the only reason why you are the way you are is because your afraid that your getting to old and us new comers are going to roll right over you. stop being this way and start helping and guiding. someone with your alleged experience can do more good by teaching, not critisizing.
thank you
learner of all
this is for you bud ---> master of none

I am curious, also new here. I am a Biologist and have handled quite a few snakes at times, including poisonous ones. But by no means am I an expert and truefully do not like handing them much. But I do appreciate and like them. Anyway my question is I know that to open an anti-venom lab is expensive and as you all have a habit of pointing out dangerous. What I want to know is where do you go to learn to be a lab tech to extract venom. Myself and some other investors want to put together a lab in Central America, but before you all freak out. I do not want to have inexperienced people milking snakes. What I do want to know is were to go to hire experienced lab techs, the cost and where new ones could be sent to be trained. Thanks Stephen

We remove/relocate rattlesnakes in southern california, ventura county area. I've been doing it for about 5 years now as volunteer work with the forest service. I have talked to a lot of people, and have gotten a lot of different answers as far as venom extraction, not a field I am in right this second, just relocation. Any helpful tips on what courses I should pursue in the future for this field to go from rattlesnake wrangler to professional?
Thank you
JCherps

Another self sticker debate in the making....I think thishas been beaten to death and until science proves otherwise, most of the aforementioned comments and this thread in general, is somewhat pointless in my opinion (which means dooky). "Innoculating" oneself is NOT an effective or well advised strategy for those who wish to do this for a living. Proper techniques, common sense, frame of mind, proper equipment and resources and paying close attention to detail is a much better defense to preventing a bite.

Umm Rob, the part of the thread about SI was from 2003 and 2007.
The last two questions were about working in a venom production lab, and what the requirements are.
Perhaps Doug H. or Jim H. can answer those questions.
Best Regards

Just a guess but to open a true venom lab/research facility/antivenom production operation would take.A large amount of education.A large amount of start up capitol.access to a large array of different species of snakes. For antivenom you need fda, product trials in animals can take years before humans can ever be involved.Market.Can you fill a nitch witch is already filled.A full staff .I hear so often how some one is going to open a venom lab.The reality of it is you are not going to.The best way to go is what Rob has done a public display. To make a liveing from snakes sounds good but try it for awhile and see it takes allot of work.No matter what way you try to do it.Snake wrangler is a far cry from venom lab.Dream big and it can be done but most people will not be able to do it and will fall short long before the lab ever has a chance to open. The market for venom is limited at best.Research labs have plenty to choose from now.If a species is found that is medically important, the labs we have will have a large head start.A venom lab is a massive undertakeing. The days of the never ending supply of snakes are long gone.Stock must be milked and rotated to replenish there supply of venom.Unlike water venom must be given time to replenish and your snakes must be healthy free from disease .I wish anyone who trys mt best but be ready to fail unless you can meet all the demands that such would require.
