Chance I am still owed over $15,000 dollars for antisera I have sent out over the last couple years. Also it takes 3 to 6 months to restock which means zoo employees do not have it for that time. This risks their lives because you do not take the time to get your own. It is not borrowing, it is being reckless not to stock your own. We import antisera with several zoos-all have used antisera to treat private keepers and most are never repaid. If you have the money to repay then it would be the best thing to stock your own. Another point: if you have to wait for it to get to you, you could die before it ever reaches the hospital. Also, remember that a helicopter flying in sub-optimal conditions (which they will do to try and save a life), or even a police car racing it to you, risks the officers lives also.
Zoos can not house animals without antisera so when they have to use up theirs on private keepers often the zoo budget will not allow for making up the shortfall. So the zoo gets rid of its animals. Zoos can get taipans easily, but the expense of antisera keeps them from obtaining them. Zoos have to follow rules set down by safety boards and AZA.
When you use the antisera you risk lives and cause research projects at our zoo to be put on hold until antisera is available.
All actions cause a reaction.

" Why is it that many
of you people think that if, say, I were to use a portion of some zoo's
AV stock, that I would not replace it?
If you can't pay for it in the first place, how do you feel you can afford to replace it if you get bit?
