Just a thought. Although this hobby/lifestyle (call it what you will) is mainly male orientated, I was wondering where are all the female herpers? Surely, there must be some out there. It's just that I've never really noticed any mailings from them. Also, what do your partners/wives REALLY think about you keeping snakes of ANY species, be they "hot" or not?

Actually we have had several female snake enthusiasts post here. In fact, a couple had to change their profiles because they looked so good in their photos that they received a lot of unwanted (and in some instances, downright rude) attention. Now most of the women who participate here, use nicknames and put up pictures of herps in their profiles.

Buzztail1. Sorry to hear that Karl!. Jesus, it's a sad life when people start harrassing their own kind, so I can see the female herps' point of view with using cover. You may have noticed that I haven't been with you guys for very long, so everytime I checked the replies or articles posted, 99% of them were male ("we snake men, hear us roar!". So one does assume that not many females are interested in keeping herps. I now sit corrected. The bench rests. No further questions your honour.

Woo Hoo! So Ms.A'85, the quest draws ever nearer to a close. But surely it is not just thee. Where are all the other scaley-maidens?... Maybe someone at the SHHS could do a survey on just what kinda percentage of females 1)keep Hot Herps (without ANY blokes around to stand over 'em, criticizing!). Or, 2)can't stand them, but "put up with them for a quite life" 3)Had some, but gave up the hobby,(but only to still keep non-venomous). I for one would be interested, as this is primarily classed by many as male only territory, with "no place for a woman" n' all that rubbish.
So, by all means remain a-nono-mouse, but, stand up and be counted n' let me know (whether an SHHS member or just a visitor to the site!) just how strong the female constituency is with regards to herps'.

I'm a gal, but I don't think it makes much difference when it comes to working with venomous snakes. I mean, nobody here is pinning cobras with their John Thomas, right? LOL At least I sincerely hope not.

LOL...I'm a member and an avid venomous keeper. I used to post here more but it seems to be not worth the hassle most of the time due to all the insults and bickering, but I do still read the of posts and contribute to legit questions when someone is sincere and friendly. Other than that I just observe all the info being posted and from time to time write an article for the newsletter/website ( although not often enough lately).

I guess you could say that I really don't like being treated differently because I have two X chromosones. I am a competent and comfortable handler who has worked hard to gain her skills, and I would really like that to be considered more important than my bra size. The fellows I've dated have all been at least tolerant of my interest in venomous snakes and one has gotten quite enthusiastic about it in his own right. However as the more experienced handler in the house, I'm the one teaching them the safety protocols and not the other way round. I imagine that a lot of women who post on the boards don't necessarily want to emphasize their sex. They may have gender neutral nicknames so they can participate in the discussion like everyone else without any silly games or gender roleplaying. The assumptions that some people make about women in this field can be very annoying, and some people may find it easier to avoid them simply by not telling.
